Tight security as Awolowo’s funeral rites begin

Security was beefed up in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, as the final burial ceremony of Chief Oluwole Awolowo commenced on Friday.

Reports say that there was heavy presence of security personnel around Our Saviour Anglican Church, the venue of the occasion.

Awolowo, 70, the publisher of the Nigerian Tribune, died on March 27 at a London hospital having battled complications resulting from an auto crash he had some years back.

Men of the mobile and regular police force, State Security Service and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were sighted manning the entrance to the church.

Those entering the church were subjected to thorough screening while those without identification cards were turned back by security personnel.

Also, only accredited journalists for the event were allowed to enter the church premises.

Cars were also not allowed into the premises while vehicles coming in and going out of the town through Sagamu axis were subjected to checks.

Government traffic control officials and FRSC personnel had an hectic time controlling vehicular movement in the area. (NAN)
