Pregnant Tenant Loses Baby To Forceful Eviction

A pregnant woman, Mrs Fatimah Idiris Idoko, has lost her six months pregnancy after her landlord allegedly ejected her family from their apartment at 5 Ayesanmi street Isheri Olofin area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.

The landlord, who is also a pastor, has been arrested and charged to Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court with conspiracy, breaking, entering and stealing.

The landlord, Pastor Oyekunle Akinloye is the founder of Alfa and Omega Gospel Church located at Idimu, Lagos.

The 40-year old cleric from Osun State, allegedly hired thugs and removed the doors and windows of his tenant, Idiris Idoko in order to force him to pack out of his house.

According to the victim’s husband, Idiris Idoko, he woke up on the day of the incident and went to his place of work at Yaba and his wife went to her shop.

He said that on his way, he forgot something and returned home to collect it only to discover that his windows and doors in his apartment had been removed by the landlord.

He said he contacted his pregnant wife and she came from her shop and when she saw what had happened, she was shocked and this resulted in complications and she started bleeding. And before he rushed her to a hospital, the baby had already gone.

He said since then, he and his family have been homeless and he had to send his three children and wife to squat with his relations.

On whether he was owing the landlord, he said he was not owing him. He said he went to pay his rent when it expired in January and the landlord asked him to keep the money until he prints new receipts.
He said he lost N480, 000 including a laptop he collected from his town association, Igala in Kogi State.

Pastor Oyekunle denied that he was the person that removed the doors and windows and pleaded not guilty after he was arraigned in court.

He told the court that it was the NNPC which was demolishing houses on pipeline right of way that did it.

But he could not explain why it was only Idoko’s apartment that was affected.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. M.B. Folami granted him bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum who must show evidence of payment of tax and means of livelihood.

He was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Lagos pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till 1 July, 2013.
