Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Friday met behind closed-doors with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The lawyer, also a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, and known for his constant opposition to the government, met with the President alongside two unidentified men.
He is currently defending the two Leadership newspapers’ journalists being prosecuted over a report on a “presidential directive” allegedly targeted at the leader of the ACN, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Falana declined to disclose the purpose of the meeting, which he said was on the affairs of the country when he was approached by State House correspondents.
He described the meeting as a “private visit.”
When asked whether the visit had to do with negotiation on the Leadership court case, the lawyer said, “It (the meeting) has nothing to do with that at all, on a very serious note.”
When journalists further asked whether the meeting was about the politics of 2015, Falana said, “No, no, no. It was for the affairs of our country, I am a stakeholder, you know that.”
The rights activist had on Sunday issued a statement condemning what he described as the harassment of media houses, proscription of free speech and intimidation of Nigerians with dissenting voices by the Jonathan administration, saying the situation was becoming worse than what played out in the military era.
He had said the nation was witnessing a progressive proscription of free speech in spite of the much touted respect for the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens by Jonathan.
