The police have on Wednesday arraigned one Chinedu Igbo, 30, before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N420,000 under the pretext of registering students for WAEC examination.
The Prosecutor, Mr Philip Osijale, told the court that the accused had, on Jan. 20, at No.168 Adetola St., Aguda, Surulere obtained N420,000 from one Victor Owunwanne.
Osijale said the accused allegedly obtained the money to register 14 students for May/June WAEC examinations.
He said that the accused did not, however, register the students in the school as earlier indicated, and on April 10, when they went to start the examinations, they were told that they were not students there.
The prosecutor said that the offence committed contravened sections 312 and 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
According to Section 312 of the Criminal Code, any person who commits an offence of false pretences is liable to imprisonment for fifteen years.
When the charge sheet was read out, the accused pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs Joy Ugbomoiko, granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to May 23.
