Plateau bans brothels

The Plateau Government on Thursday banned brothels operation and directed operators to immediately close them.

“All operators of such brothels have been directed to immediately close down or face full wrath of the law,’’ Mr Abraham Yiljap, the state Commissioner for Information, said in Jos.

Yiljap, who spoke after the weekly State Executive Council meeting chaired by Gov. Jonah Jang, said that government had never endorsed the operations of the brothels.

He stressed that revenue officers had always been cautioned against visiting such areas to source revenue.

Yiljap described brothels as “detrimental’’ to the spiritual well being of the Plateau people.
“Government intends to strengthen its revenue base, but we have decided never to collect any revenue from brothels in view of their negative influences on the society,’’ he said.

He directed revenue collectors never to collect revenue from brothels henceforth, adding “their activities are illegal so no revenue should be collected from any of them,’’ he asserted.

The commissioner also frowned at activities of revenue collectors at the local government areas, noting that some had formed the habit of blocking roads “in the guise of revenue collection’’.

“Those fond of constituting such nuisance should stop forthwith or face the wrath of the law because it is illegal to block roads,’’ he said.
