Murder trial suffers setback as prosecution fails to present witnesses

The trial of an accused, Ann Agu, for alleged murder suffered a setback on Monday as the prosecution failed to present three witnesses.

Agu was arraigned in an FCT High Court on a two-count charge of stabbing her neighbour, Kemi Agubiade and attempting to commit suicide.

At the resumed hearing of the case, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr John Ijabemi, told the court that he had challenges bringing his witnesses to court.

Ijabemi said the witnesses were supposed to have arrived in Abuja from Lagos State, only for them to call him that they could not make it to Abuja and prayed the court for a short adjournment.

He apologised for the absence of the witnesses and promised to produce them by the next adjourned date.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Ifeanyi Ogbuona, told the court that the prosecutor had promised to produce the remaining witnesses during the last sitting on Feb, 15 only for him to renege on his promise.

“My Lord, I am short of words’’ Ogbuona said.

In his ruling, the Presiding Judge, Justice Ishaq Bello, granted the application of the prosecution and adjourned the case to May 27.

Bello said the prosecution must unfailingly produce the three witnesses by the next adjourned date.(NAN)
