An auto spare parts dealer, Santos Korie, was killed on Thursday morning by gunmen who wore the Nigerian Mobile Police, Mopol, uniform at Daleko Bus Stop along the Mushin/Isolo Expressway Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.
The victim, a foreigner, popularly called millionaire by his friends and associates, was said to be in company of a friend in his Toyota Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle when he was accosted and shot by the policemen.
Giving an eyewitness account of the incident, a woman who sells wares close to the bridge where the incident occurred said: “I have never seen such a thing in my life. I was here this morning (Thursday) for the market’s weekly sanitation. The traffic was light but there were no policemen and the National Union Road Transport Workers at the traffic point. I didn’t know when the victim drove to the bridge but all I saw was when two men in Mopol uniform were arguing with the victim.
“The man did not get down from the car but he was gesticulating with his hand, asking the Mopol officers what the problem was. All of a sudden, a PSP truck blocked the officers to enable the victim drive his car but the officer quickly turned to the other side and shot him right in the car.
“I was scared and shouted when I heard the gunshot. I was surprised when I heard somebody was in the car with the man.”
There was confusion and people scampered for safety when they first heard the gunshot before they gathered around the victim who was bleeding profusely.

The eyewitness said the gunmen were able to flee because the traffic was light and the market was not yet open because of the sanitation.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the Commander-in-charge of Area ’D’, Mushin, Mr. Omololu Bishi later arrived the scene of the incident with a team of policemen who took the victim away with the driver of a water sachet company whose van hit the victim’s car.
Another eye witness, a transport worker, said he did not know why the motorist was killed.
He claimed that he knew the Mopol officers who killed the man, alleging that the officers usually come to the junction to carry out illegal arrests.
“On Saturday, they arrested me and others. So, I recognised them when they came again today (Thursday). Last week, they came in a commuter bus which was driven by a tout known as Sunday or Sylvester. We trailed the commuter bus but because the policemen were armed, we stayed a distance away so that we won’t get shot.
“ When the officers got to where there was traffic, they jumped off from the bus and fled on motorcycles. We were able to get the registration number of one of the bikes they used to escape.”
Meanwhile, a police source said the gunmen have been arrested.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident.
Braide said in a statement that investigations were ongoing, adding that it was too soon to say if the assailants were actually policemen or impostors in police uniform.
She said arrests had been made and some suspects had been taken to SARS.
Braide said,: “At about 7am Thursday, the Area Commander, Area ‘D’ Mushin, received a distress call that there was a shooting incident around Daleko Bridge, Mushin. Some policemen were immediately dispatched to the area but on arrival, the gun men had disappeared.”
