Huge population, unemployment hinder effective policing – Ex-IG

A former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Adewusi, has said securing Nigeria is an enormous task for the police on account of the nation’s huge population and teeming unemployed youths.

Adewusi stated that the police would have been able to police the country effectively had successive government invested in its capacity as the society grew in population and complexity.

He stated this in Abuja on Saturday during the presentation of the Nigeria Police Force: the journey so far, a book edited by the Inspector -General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.

The former IG lauded the current IG for working hard to return the police to its glorious days, noting that the various policies being implemented by the police administration would reposition the Force to contain the security challenges in the country.

He said, “The task of policing Nigeria is quite enormous; you have a big population you cannot control, that is a big problem for the police, then you have a large turn-out of school graduates. These young men have no job and so many of them commit a lot of crimes. Then you have the religious fanatics, all these problems are on your neck.”

Abubakar reiterated the commitment of the police to protecting lives and property and asserted the commitment of the government to the realization of the objective of the force.

He explained that the book whose launch is part of activities to mark the Nigeria Police Week is aimed at undertaking a self-assessment with a view to celebrating achievements and identifying challenges.

Other dignitaries at the event which held at the Shehu Musa Yar Adua centre included the chief presenter, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, former IG, Sunday Ehindero and the book reviewer, Prof. Etannibi Alemika.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd), has said Nigeria will overcome the security challenges currently facing the nation.

Olubolade said in an interview with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Friday that insecurity would be solved during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to him, Jonathan has shown determination and commitment to solve the problem of terrorism and other crimes which have ravaged some parts of the country.
