The Federal Government has approved N25bn in the 2013 budget to support 65,000 poor households in the rural communities, Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, Dr. Precious Gbeneol said.
The fund, which will be disbursed under the Conditional Grant Scheme, is the arrangement wherein the Federal Government is to provide N10 bn; the states, N10 bn; and the local government councils contributes N5bn
According to Gbeneol, the fund will go a long way in eradicating extreme poverty and hunger in the households.
She also said the government had recorded remarkable success in the implementation of Millennium Development Goals in the past few years. She however admitted that the country could have done better in some areas.
Gbeneol, in a statement in Abuja to mark 1,000 days to end the MDGs framework, also decried the effects of insecurity in the north to achieving overall goal of the MDGs.
“For instance, there has been a reduction from the 2008 National Demographic Health Survey figure for the under five mortality rate of 157 deaths per 1,000 live births, to 94 deaths. This trend is similar for infant mortality rate,” said Gbeneol.
He however added that the infant mortality rate of 61 per 1,000 live births needed to be reduced by 50 per cent in order to meet the 2015 target.”
