Dana crash: Coroner summons Aviation minister

The suspended proceeding before the Coroner court, unravelling circumstances leading to the Dana air crash in Lagos last year resumed, yesterday, with the presiding judge, Mr Oyetade Komolafe, directing that witness summon be issued on the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, to appear before it.

Also to appear is a pathologist, Prof. Adekunbi Banjo, who is to testify on his observations of the victims, who lost their lives during the ill-fated air crash involving Dana plane on June 3, 2012.
Over 170 people died during the crash, including 153 passengers and some residents of Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State.

Magistrate Komolafe said it was important for the minister to appear and observe what the coroner was doing as well as answer some questions on the ill-fated aircraft.

He said: ”Let the Minister of Aviation come and see what we are doing here and when she comes, we will have some questions for her.”

On the appearance of Banjo, a consultant with the Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB, Komolafe said this would enable him testify in the interest of fair hearing.

While Komolafe was to appear before the inquest on May 22, no specific date was fixed for Oduah to appear. However, the minister is expected to appear between May 20 to 24, depending on the dates she prefers.

The lawyer representing the Accident Bureau, Mr Babatunde Irukera, had made a case for the pathologist to be allowed to testify at the inquest.

Irukera said his testimony would assist the coroner to come to a just and meaningful conclusion since he had worked previously with AIB on other crashes.
