Court remands cop who killed pregnant woman

A Chief Magistrate in Ondo State, Mrs Charity Adeyanju, yesterday, ordered that the Police Constable, Alonge Abdul, who allegedly killed a pregnant woman, Mrs Segi Olajiga, in Akure, Ondo State be remanded in prison custody for murder.

This came as the Association of Women Lawyers, yesterday, petitioned the Ondo State Police Command, saying the dismissal of the killer cop will be grossly inadequate.

They called for his prosecution pleading with the police authorities not to sweep the case under the carpet.

The accused person was arraigned before an Akure Chief Magistrate Court and was accompanied by a detachment of policemen.

Police Prosecutor Ayodele Atandeyi in the charge preferred against the dismissed policeman said “that you, Alonge Abdul, 32 male, on April 2, 2013 at about 6.30pm at Plaza Hotel Akure in the Akure Magisterial did unlawfully kill one Madam Segi Olajiga with one A.K47 rifle issued to you and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the criminal code cap 37 Vol 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria.”

The Prosecutor informed the court after the charge was read to the accused that the court lacked the jurisdiction to try murder case.

Abdul was represented by Mr Fele Aso and did not object to the prosecutor’s plea for a date.
The trial Magistrate Adeyanju therefore fixed hearing of the case for June 18 this year.

Meanwhile, the women lawyers in the petition against the killer cop said that Abdul’s action had denied “Segi her right to life as enshrined in section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution and should be so punished.”

A letter signed by the association’s secretary, Mrs. Bunmi Niyi-Arajuwa said “the Police officer who points loaded gun at an innocent civilian on the street is assumed to intend the killing of such civilian.”
