President Jonathan Grants Alamieyeseigha, Yar’Adua, Diya, Presidential Pardon

FORMER Chief of Staff Supreme Military Council, and brother of the late President, Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua; former Chief of General Staff, Oladipo Diya and former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha were among those granted state pardon.

The Council of State, unanimously approved the list of those pardoned yesterday.

The Council of State, which is comprised of the President, Vice President, all state governors, former Presidents, the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Senate President and Speaker, amongst others.

Others granted pardon include Major Bello Magaji (rtd), Mohammed Lima Biu, Shettima Bulama, Major Geeneral Abdulkareem Adisa (Post Humous) and Major Segun Fadipe (rtd) respectively.
On Mr. Alamieyeseigha, Mr. Jonathan will tell council members that the former governor requested a presidential pardon long ago but that he was reluctant to bring it before members because he wanted to be sure that the former governor was now contrite.

The president, our source said, would stress how important Mr. Alamieyeseigha is to the Ijaw nation and the great role he could play in maintaining peace and security in the Niger Delta region.

Mr. Jonathan will further argue that his former boss had shown remorse and that he should given opportunity to contribute his quota to the process of nation building.

Mr. Alamieyeseigha, who Mr. Jonathan recently described as his political mentor, was impeached by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in December 2005, following his arrest by the London Metropolitan Police over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

Afterwards, he was arrested and prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on money laundering and corruption offences. On July 30, 2007, M.L. Shuaibu, a judge of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, sentenced him to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

After the former governor was impeached, prosecuted and jailed in Nigeria for corruption and his assets, valued at about £17.7 million confiscated, the Federal Government went ahead to institute proceedings against him, his wife, Margaret, and two of his companies in a bid to seize his assets in the United Kingdom.

The National Council of State comprise the president, all former heads of the government of the Federation, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all the governors of the Federation and the attorney general of the federation.
The body advises the president on prerogative of mercy, awards of national honours, appointment of members of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the National Judicial Council and the National Population Commission and national population census issues.

  2. The general view of the whole world that this Jonathan's regime is doing nothing to fight corruption keeps manifesting everyday. What kind of amnesty should be granted to these criminals who had caused sufferings to citizens of this country? The Ijaw people should be ashamed of having such a son, he is a disgrace to the Ijaw people.

  6. WHAT IN GOD'S NAME QUALIFIES ALAMIEYESEIGHE FOR STATE PARDON EVEN IF WE ACCEPT THE OTHERS? MR PRESIDENT ALSO GO AHEAD AND UNFREEZE ALL HIS CONFISCATED PROPERTY AND ALSO RE-INSTATE HIM AS THE GOVERNOR OF YOUR STATE. THIS YOUR MOVE DOES NOT GIVE US CONFIDENCE IN YOUR MUCH MOUTHED FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION.

  8. The standard of Education has indeed drop signficantly. Why cant we read and understand. From the story above, Nigerianeye or whoever put up the writeup is only speculating and infact reading the mind of the president for an act that has not been done. Infact the heading was authoritative to name Alamieyesigha as been pardoned while the body of the report says something else.

  11. THIS REPREHENSIBLE ABUSE OF THE POWER TO GRANT PRESIDENTIAL PARDON IN THE CASE OF ALAMESIEGHA IS NOT ONLY IMMORAL, BUT HAS GREATLY DAMAGED THE DIGNITY & ESTEEM OF THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT. I BELIEVE IT SHOULD COUNT AS ONE OF THE MANY IMPEACHABLE OFFENCES THIS CLUELESS PRESIDENT HAS COMMITTED AND FOR WHICH HE OUGHT TO BE PERMANENTLY THROWN OUT OF ASO ROCK AND SHOWN THE WAY TO OTUOKE!

  15. Do you still want the so called big thief to continue the business of governance? Or what is Jonathsn trying to point out,Nigerians expected you to sentence Alamieyeseigha to death by hanging...later now you will pardon Yusuf 'who stole all the pension money

  16. presidential pardon implies they are now qualified to contest any elective post and also be given appointments and other benefits that are due to patriots. There is lopesidedness in the presidential pardon (only highly placed individuals and those who are close to him). The president would also have granted pardon to all the prisoners across the country who had spent 3 years but had shown repentant heart after all what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. This would have shut the mouth of his critics. He had shown that he is not a president for all Nigerians.

  20. I think the president should not be condemn for granting pardon to Alamieyeseigha and co, its was a nice move beside President Bush granted presidential pardons to 189 persons in 1999 with worst crime.
Let us all let to praise any thing good and never be carried away with all politicians cry and condemnation among themselves.
I criticize government a lot but on this pardon matter, I thing Jona deserve an applause.
