A group of Concerned Nigerians made up of some past presidents of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS and former Vice President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has accused the presidency of being behind the controversy raging in the registration of All Progressive Congress, APC.
Two new political groups with same acronym -APC, including the African Peoples Congress and the All Patriotic Citizens are laying claims to have applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be registered as political parties just as the APC claimed that it had the intellectual property of the acronym being the first to have announced same on February 6, 2013, with the proposed merging of three parties. They include the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP and the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC.
Addressing Journalists yesterday in Abuja, the concerned citizens alleged that some some people within the presidency were behind the controversy, adding that they had been working with some persons in INEC to scuttled the ongoing merger talks among the opposition political parties.
Spokesperson of the group and former Vice President of NLC, Comrade Sani Lukeman also claimed that the documents paraded by the African Peoples Congress which unveiled its constitution, logo and emblem on Thursday were forged with discrepancies in both the signature of the acting National President and the General Secretary.
The group specifically identified one of such forged documents as INEC FORM PA 1, alleging that instead of the sea green colour which was yellowish green, the one reportedly unveiled by the African Peoples Congress was ‘’green in colour.’’
According to him, the controversial APC also claimed to have submitted its application for registration on March 1, 2013, while the date reflected on it showed the document was signed on March 12, 2013, wondering how it could be signed about two weeks after its submission.
Besides the group alleged that when the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, applied for registration by INEC through legal representatives, the commission turned down the application saying that it could only do so, through its National Chairman, the National Secretary and the Treasurer, wondering why after setting a precedent, same INEC now accepted purported application from both African Peoples Congress and All Patriotic Citizens through legal representations.
The group claimed that although it was not representating of any political platforms or groups, said that, as Nigerians wanted peace and stability of the country.
“Our objective is to assist the nation to be able to get the best for the good of the country. There are some people committed to fast tracking a pre-emptive move to ensure that the merging parties are blocked.
“It is here that the management of INEC is now problematic. When Prof. Attahiru Jega, INEC chairman assumed office, there was expectation that he will sanitize INEC, but unfortunately there are still PDP card- carrying members who are in INEC… NEC should look at the criteria for registration to see if the associations seeking to be registered have met the requirements.’’ Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
