One shot, dozens sustain injuries in Akwa Ibom

One person, Mr. Anietie Tom, was shot on the head and dozens of others were inflicted with machete cuts in Unyenge community, in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Tom was said to have been shot on his way to Unyenge from Enwang on Tuesday by a man loyal to youth president, Mr. Emmanuel Tekim.

It was learnt that on Monday Unyenge community had summoned Tekim to a meeting with all Uda communities who prevailed on him to vacate his seat as youth president of Unyenge.

It was learnt that Tekim was disappointed at the development and swore that he would not hand over the youth leadership to anyone else.

A community leader of Udung Ejo in Unyenge, Mr. Savier Ekpe, said besides the shooting of Tom from Utit Antai, many other youths including Uduak Asukwo, were stabbed.

He said Tom and Asukwo including other youths who were inflicted with machete cuts, were receiving treatments in many hospitals spread across Mbo, Oron and Eket.

He said, “I don’t see how a youth president is more powerful than the entire community of Uda who decided that his activities as youth president be suspended and a caretaker committee be constituted to select a new leader.

“Instead of him to respect the wishes of the people, he went ahead and talked some youths onto his side, obtaining arms and ammunition for them to start shooting and killing those who are not loyal to him.

“We have been having running battle with him for a long time. Since he became youth president in the last four months, Unyenge as a community has not known peace but division and strife.

“He has embezzled all the money an energy company in Unyenge pays to the community through his bank account. When asked to account for the money, he couldn’t say anything but began to threaten the peace and harmony of the community.”
