Nigerian Police Parade Bank Robbery Suspects

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, on Monday paraded six suspected armed robbers, allegedly terrorising members of the public in Lagos, Ondo and Ogun states.

Parading the suspects at the police headquarters in Ikeja, Manko urged members of the public to collaborate with the force by giving timely information.

He said that this would assist the force to checkmate robbery activities in the state.

He said that the suspects, who allegedly belonged to different gangs, were rounded up through information provided by members of the public.

The police commissioner explained that three of the suspects belonged to a robbery gang who attempted to rob one of the old generation banks in Isolo.

Manko said that the police was able to foil the operation, due to the timely information supplied by some members of the public.

“We got information that a 13-man-robbery gang, whose members live in Ondo, Ogun and Lagos states, planned an attack on the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Isolo branch.

“A crack team of detectives, led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Mr. Abba Kyari, laid ambush at Abule-Egba junction, along the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, where the armed robbers were intercepted.

“After engaging in gun battle, seven of the armed robbers were killed, three arrested with bullet wounds and three escaped.

“Three AK-47 rifles, nine AK-47 magazines, fully loaded, three locally made double barrel pistols, 65 live cartridges and two cars, were recovered from the suspects,“ Manko said.

The police commissioner, who commended the informants for a job well done, added that with such regular information, activities of hoodlums in the state would be curbed.

“We learnt about the suspects’ plan on time and we move swiftly, hence the result we have today.
“Armed robbers and other criminals should know that Lagos is a no-go area to carry out crime. Those on the run will be arrested soon, “ he said.

In a related development, Manko said that three other suspects, whose gang specialised in snatching cars in Lagos and selling them in other states, were arrested in Ibadan, Ilorin and Lagos.
He said that one of the suspects, simply identified as Ejike, was the ring-leader of a jail-break in Shagamu, Ogun, on 3 January.

Manko said that the same suspects had been charged to court in Ogun and Lagos for various criminal offences.

He said that three vehicles, two locally made single barrel short guns and 20 live cartridges, were recovered from the suspects.
