Commercial activities at Akure High Court premises were on Monday paralysed when suspected supporters of the Labour Party and the Action Congress of Nigeria clashed.
The clash left four persons injured, and many cars vandalised.
The supporters, mainly youths, it was gathered, used stones, clubs and other dangerous items during the fracas.
Owners of shops along the street hurriedly locked up their shops and deserted the area while motorists, plying the road, also diverted their movements to alternative routes.
Eyewitnesses said the two rival party supporters started the fight shortly after the candidate of the ACN, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, came out of the courtroom and was hailed by his supporters.
Akeredolu was in court for the ongoing October 20, 2012 governorship election petitions in the state.
Security operatives from the state police command quickly stormed the area to prevent the fight from getting out of hand.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wole Ogodo, said the area was calm after men of the command arrived at the scene.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission closed its case before the tribunal without calling any witness.
Counsel for the commission, Chief Gboyega Awomolo (SAN), told the tribunal that the commission would not be calling any witness.
He told the Justice Andovar Kaka’an-led tribunal that the commission decided not to call any witness since the tribunal had struck out the aspect of the petition concerning it in its ruling of February 4, 2013.
He said, “The third respondent will not call any witness for some reasons. Number one, we have taken a critical review of the pleadings of parties and we have concluded that the key allegation against the third respondent relates to allegations of tampering with the voter register used for the 2012 governorship election in the state.
“We have discovered that the tribunal by its ruling of February 4, 2013, had struck out paragraph 32 to 35 of the petitioner’s petition, where he complained of manipulation of the voter register.’’
