Jonathan, others mourn Awolowo

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday described the death of the Publisher of the Tribune Newspapers, Chief Oluwole Awolowo, as sad and painful.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President noted that Awolowo was a distinguished evangelist, humanist and community leader.

He described the deceased as a worthy and honoured member of the Awolowo dynasty who diligently served God and humanity to the best of his abilities.

The statement read in part, “President Jonathan commended Chief Awolowo’s steadfast, life-long commitment to upholding, maintaining and continually improving the Tribune newspapers which ensured that the Nigerian Tribune and its sister publications have remained an objective voice of reason in Nigeria’s media space and continue to offer invaluable services to the nation.

“It is not a mean feat to have sustained the Tribune newspapers over the years.

“On behalf of himself, his family and the Federal Government, President Jonathan extended heartfelt condolences to Chief Awolowo’s immediate family, the matriarch of the Awolowo family, Mrs. Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, other family members, the Ikenne community, the management and staff of Tribune newspapers, as well as the people and government of Ogun State.

“The President prayed that God will console the bereaved and grant the soul of Chief Oluwole Awolowo peaceful rest.”

Gbenga Daniel -
The former governor of Ogun State Otunba Gbenga Daniel has visited the Awolowo family to commiserate with them on the death of Chief Oluwole Awolowo, the publisher of the Nigerian Tribune. Otunba Daniel who visited the Ikene country home of the late sage on Thursday , March 28 said the death of Chief Oluwole Awolowo has robbed the country of a peace builder and an unassuming leader who contributed his own quota to the making of a better society.

“Chief Oluwole Awolowo lived his life in the service of the people. He was a quiet philanthropist and an exemplary leader who impacted the lives of those who came in contact with him positively . We should also salute his contributions to the growth of journalism and democracy in the country. He served creditably well as a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly in the eighties and he kept the flag of Nigerian tribune flying loftily in the face of daunting challenges. He was amiable , jovial and down to earth. We will all miss him. I commiserate with the matriarch Mama HID Awolowo, the sisters , and immediate family of the deceased as well as the management and staff of the Nigerian Tribune. May the good Lord grant him eternal rest and give all those he left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”Otunba Daniel said.

Dr. Kayode Fayemi -
Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed shock on the death of the Publisher of the Tribune titles, Chief Oluwole Awolowo.
Fayemi in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, regretted that death has robbed the Awolowo clan of a shinning star who had been a motivator of the family since the demise of the patriarch, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The governor stressed that the loss became more painful by the fact that the family was yet to fully recover from the death of Oluwole’s sister, Mrs. Ayodele Soyode, who passed on less than two years ago.
He credited Oluwole with the nurturing of the Nigerian Tribune, a big media empire which has endured for over 60 years.
He also added that the deceased distinguished himself by his tenacity of purpose, resilience and the diligence with which he pursued the goals he believed in.
The governor said Oluwole would be remembered for using politics to add value to governance as a legislator at the council and state levels.
“Chief Wole Awolowo was a colorful politician who gave effective and purposeful representation to the good people of Apapa Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly in the Second Republic.
“His humility was legendary and he never allowed his privileged background to enter into his head. He made himself available to whoever needed his attention and served humanity to the best of his ability.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Ekiti State, I condole with the Awolowo family, the Tribune family, the Ikenne community and the entire Yoruba race on this great loss”, Fayemi said.
