Ambition with only N5000
I went to House of Representatives in 1999 and the only money I had then was N5000. But as the election drew near, I started having a lot of support from people during that period.
I was tortured, bullied and disgraced because some people who felt they owned Anambra State did everything they could to take my ticket from me. I felt as if the world had come to an end and many people in our state knew that I was being denied my right for no justifiable reason.
But by God’s grace, I emerged as PDP candidate and went to the national assembly to represent Anambra East and West. During that period, one person I would ever remain grateful to is Sir Emeka Offor who didn’t have any relations with me.
He didn’t know me, but when he heard the torture I was passing through, he came to my rescue and assisted me generally. And everything I have been doing all through, Emeka Offor family has remained like my own family. That is what I classify as Nwanne Di Na Mba (a brother at a distance)
.
I had to resign from Senate
When I went to the senate it was also like that. But there I established contracts and built a name that people will want to associate with. During that period, I assisted the then governor, Dr Chris Ngige and most of the House of Assembly members. At the end of the day, all of us worked together to project the image of Anambra. At that period, I was the only senator at the national assembly backing Ngige because at that particular time, AnambraState was burning and being disorganized by forces that felt that they own the state and would determine whatever happened in the state. At a point, they even felt that they could challenge God, assaulting even some priests. We thank God the rest is now history.
Why I want to be governor
My purpose of consulting and talking to elders of AnambraState and stakeholders is for me to get the clear window so that by the time I tell Anambrarians that I want to contest, they will be part of that contest. It will not just be buying vehicles and moving around, but to articulate what our problems are and how we will solve those problems. That is why the consultation is taking me time and I believe that in the next few days, I should be able to have a good outing with stakeholders in AnambraState , including very powerful members of PDP and opinion moulders. After the interaction, if the window is clear, I will now tell them my intention that I will be ready to offer service to Anambra people. I see myself as a stakeholder in AnambraState and I believe that I am coming to contest this governorship as AnambraState indigene and not to represent any particular group or interest.
How I stopped Obi’s impeachment
When Governor Peter Obi was to be impeached by the same people who fought Ngige, I was at the centre of it to make sure that impeachment did not work. I sat with 12 members of the House of Assembly to make sure they didn’t get two-thirds in the assembly and that is why Peter Obi is still the Governor of Anambra State. If I didn’t play the kind of role I played for Ngige, Peter Obi wouldn’t have remained the governor. I thank Governor Obi because he talks about it and appreciates it everyday. The same way Ngige does. So my total loyalty is based on AnambraState and not based on any particular individual, group or section of the state. I believe that God created me in AnambraState for me to put in all my efforts to make this state grow.
