ANXIETY mounted in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, yesterday, as unknown gunmen laid siege to the waterways, hijacking about four boats and their occupants.
However, the armed forces responded by deploying security agents to counter the gunmen. At press time, soldiers and navy personnel were jointly patrolling the waterways with gunboats, while the Delta Waterways Security Committee, DWSC, Warri, has also stepped into the matter.
A source said the attack was not unconnected with the rivalry between the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups over the political leadership of Warri North Local Government Area.
The Ijaw are allegedly accusing the Itsekiri of marginalising them in the area.
Nevertheless, a source told Vanguard: “It is some oil bunkerers that are behind it, they are setting the two ethnic groups against each other to enable them carry out their business unfettered.”
It was gathered that the Itsekiri ethnic group got wind of the planned attack and sent warning signals to its natives not to venture into the river.
