FG to recover funds from failed contractors

The Federal Government has said it will initiate measures to recover funds from contractors who failed to deliver.

Leader of the presidential team on ecological projects for the South-East geo-political zone, Mr. Emeka Eze, disclosed the Federal Government’s decision while inspecting on-going erosion control project at Nkisi Water Works area of Onitsha at the weekend.

The measure, he explained, was to promote efficiency in project execution.

According to Eze, who is the Director General of Bureau of Public Procurement, the Federal Government has also decided that contractors will henceforth, be grouped based on their competence and capability.

While commending the contractor handling the Onitsha project, Eze faulted the engineering and design of the project which, he said, needed to be revisited, reminding consultants of the need for proper project definition and packaging to enable contractors perform efficiently.

The team leader commended Governor Peter Obi for demonstrating quality leadership and high level of cooperation with the Federal Government in serving the people.

Obi, who commended President Goodluck Jonathan for sending the team to access the project, regretted that gully erosion had remained a serious challenge to the state, adding that it submerged and destroyed the water scheme in Onitsha, thereby denying residents of the town water over the years.

He also emphasized the need for the state government to be fully involved in federal government projects in the state to ensure proper supervision.

The governor informed the team that the state government was partnering with a Turkish company to resuscitate the Greater Onitsha Water Scheme abandoned several decades ago.
