An incident involving a Caverton helicopter has forced the aviation authorities to close the Ibadan Airport in Oyo State to traffic.
The incident, which occurred yesterday, affected a scheduled flight of Arik Air from Abuja to pick up passengers, especially some top journalists who were in the ancient city at the weekend for the national conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
LEADERSHIP Sunday learnt that the helicopter had its tyre punctured when it landed on the airport’s runway.
Although officials of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) were not forthcoming with details on the incident, an airline official confirmed that an Arik Air flight from Abuja to Ibadan was delayed for several hours following the development.
Mr. Yakubu Dati, spokesman of the Federal Airports Authority (FAAN), who confirmed it, said it was a standard safety procedure to close an airport to traffic when such the incident occurred.
The measure, he said was to enable the affected authorities to investigate the incident.
“There was an incident involving a helicopter which had a punctured tyre after landing. You know safety is no respecter of persons and it is a safety procedure to close down access to traffic to determine what caused the incident,” Dati said.
