EBONYI State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, has been shut down by the state government following a series of students' protests that bogged the state-owned tertiary institution since the commencement of the 2012/2013 academic session over the increase in tuition.
According to the Vice Chancellor of EBSU, Professor Francis Idike, who announced the indefinite closure of the university, the action was necessitated by the tension, which the protesting students had created across the state. He added that if the institution was not closed immediately, it might lead to a new wave of insecurity in the state.
The government's action came on the heels of the latest protest this week during which the students temporally brought commercial and social activities to a halt as they barricade various parts of the state capital while anti-riot policemen engaged them squarely.
One commuter bus belonging to the Students' Union Government (SUG) was burnt by the students, who came under heavy teargas from the Police in the state, as they chanted war songs in protest against the alleged unilateral increase in tuition.
They also accused their leaders of being stooges of the state government. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
