Amosun, Ogun lawmakers apologise over show of shame

GOVERNOR Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and the leaders of the two warring factions of the State House of Assembly, yesterday, publicly apologized to the people of the State and Nigerians for the violence and disgraceful conduct by the lawmakers.

The apology came after Amosun held two hours closed door meeting with the warring lawmakers at his office, where he brokered peace between them.

The lawmakers who had been at the daggers drawn over the constitution of tender’s board, embraced one another after the meeting and later held a plenary with all of them in attendance and Suraj Adekunbi presiding.

Amosun speaks
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the governor said: “I want to apologise on behalf of the House of Assembly, the good people of Ogun and to all lovers of democracy.

This is Ogun State, the home of Awolowo, Obasanjo, Soyinka and other giants who have laboured selflessly to make us what we are. So, we cannot afford to let them down, we are sorry.
“There can be no befitting birthday gift than this to the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. They are the one that have laboured selflessly for all of us. So, I think this is a perfect birthday gift for baba Obafemi Awolowo and respect for all others who have laboured to place Ogun on an enviable height in the contest of the Nigerian nation or government.”

Adekunbi, Hassan beg
Also speaking, the embattled Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi and the Speaker Protem, Remmy Hassan jointly begged the people of Ogun State for the show of shame’.

Adekunbi said: “We have met as one big happy family and what happened was quite unfortunate. By the special grace of God, you will be seeing us doing our legislative responsibility in accordance with the extant law. You will see us discharge our responsibilities in a normal way by appreciating ourselves, giving ourselves due recognition as members and as true representatives of Ogun State.
“Sincerely, we want to use this medium to apologise to all good people of Ogun State for what transpired at the hallowed chamber, yesterday.”

On his part, Remmy Hassan said: “We offended the entire citizenry of Ogun State, but, sometimes you cannot completely rule out such when there are issues that are going beyond what temper can handle. We are saying here to all the good people of Ogun State that we are sorry.

“Because if this is a state where the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo hailed from and he ran the best of parliaments in the 60s and 70s, it should not be the state that would be an example of what is repugnant to acceptable norms in a legislature. But of course, we have risen far above that.

“Thank God it is one big happy family, we will proceed from here to the Chamber. It is going to be business as usual, the way it is meant to be done in a legislature, with due process, with our rules, with the constitution, with our extant laws and with acceptable convention.”

While speaking on purported suspension of the leadership of the House, Hassan said: “Everything that transpired before now, we have risen above it. The House is one. I will give the microphone to the Speaker to also say one or two things.”

Earlier, security men had taken over the Assembly and prevented the four ‘rebellious’ lawmakers from entering into the legislative complex.

The aggrieved lawmakers led by Hassan had planned to hold plenary under the tree close to the Chamber with a hired mace before the governor intervened.

Vanguard gathered that the national leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, had mandated the governor to resolve the crisis before it went out of hand.

Vanguard, also, learnt that Amosun’ s aide, the immediate-past Speaker of the Assembly, Tunji Egbetokun, facilitated the meeting between the lawmakers and the governor.
