Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State shocked guests at the traditional wedding of the Nigerian hip pop sensation on Friday when he announced a gift of two brand new Toyota Prado SUVs to the musician and his wife, Annie Macaulay.
At the event in Eket, Mr. Akpabio also announced that the state would bankroll an all-expense paid trip for 29 delegates from the state to attend the white wedding of the couple fixed for Dubai, the United Arab Emirate on March 23.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Akwa Ibom State, I have decided to donate two brand new Toyota SUVs to the couple,” the governor announced with glee. “Also 29 Akwa Ibom delegates will join the wedding which is billed to come up in Dubai.”
He also promised to rehabilitate the Eket-Ibeno Road ahead of the child dedication of Tuface and Annie.
Moments after the donations were made, some concerned indigenes of the state telephoned PREMIUM TIMES, saying the governor had taken his wasteful spending of the state’s meager resources too far.
“How do you explain this kind of situation where a governor donates cars to people who can afford it when majority of the people in his state can’t afford a meal a day?,” said one angry resident who requested anonymity for fear he might be attacked by the governor’s loyalists.
“This man treats the resources of the state like his personal estate, moving about with huge cash and dashing money to everyone as if the funds belong to him.”
The criticism of Governor Akpabio however did not however take the shine off the wedding which held at Apostolic High School, Esit Urua Community, along Eket-Ibeno Road.
The event was scheduled for noon but did not begin until 4p.m. A notorious late comer to events, Governor Akpabio, as usual, arrived the venue around 5:20 p.m. in the company of Senators Helen Esuene and Aloysius Etok.
When the two love birds got engaged on Valentine’s Day last year, many thought a star-studded wedding was in the offing. But they instead settled for a private civil marriage in Lagos, shortly after.
Tuface defended the decision back then, saying it was largely due to the deep respect he had for the feelings and emotions of the two major characters/lovers in his life – Sunmbo Ajaba and Pero Adeniyi.
The couple have now fixed a star-studded wedding and honeymoon for faraway, Dubai, United Arab Emirates on March 23.

ReplyDeleteWat a shame!those are tax payers money, squandered on people that already rich, it can only happen in Nigeria, what is the bases for all these! Imagine delegates going to dubai for tuface's wedding, so those ones too will say they are on official assignment! Chai! Ds country needs help, even our leaders can no longer tell what is right or inappropriate.
ReplyDeletesquare pegs in round holes. Shameless people
ReplyDeleteNigerian leaders really have some mental problems. what has the state government got to do with theses individuals' private affairs (wedding)? The SUVs given out to the couple - is the money from Akpabio's pocket or the State fund? The people of Akwa Ibom need to ask. Corruption shows itself in various forms and this is one form of it. In as much as praises are been rained on Akpabio as doing well, I personally think he is going the extent of being to extravagant and doing unnecessary things.Akwa Ibom may be having so much money accruing to it from oil, resulting to infrastructural developments, but the average Akwa Ibom citizen is very poor and many are jobless. The governor should concentrate more on job creation as he builds roads and airports otherwise he will leave a state with fine roads and airport with no cash flow in the state. Let him also hands off enriching the already rich with his cash and cars gifts.
ReplyDeletenow mr gov, u r reckless. change yr advisers. even a mere child will fault this action of yrs. some wrong decision is like a bad scare. opponents r taking records too. its noble to be a giver but when a gift is wasteful it becomes corruption... OGE
ReplyDeleteI hope he gives out such kind of gifts to every marriage that takes place in Akwa-ibom. In that way, he would have been very fair to all! He would be remembered for encouraging marriage in the state! What a SENSELESS spending! Tax payers money for crying out loud!
ReplyDeleteWaoo, u could use dis fund to better d lives of impoverished citizens of akwaibom who wl rain divine prayers on u and d state. 2face is already made and to him u hav only done 1/100 of wot he can do for others and therefore owes u no gratitude.
ReplyDeleteIt is this kind of profligacy and senseless waste that make some people clamour for the take over of govt by military revolutionalists who would not only make the "Donatus" Governor spend a long time in jail, but also recover the suvs and other such useless "gifts". This clearly proves that second terms for Politicians, especially Governors should be scrapped! Would he have dared to so waste the State's resources during his first term and expect to be reelected?
ReplyDeleteBesides the Man will account as we all know. When you are in office, everyone praise you until when you are out.
ReplyDeleteYou an take your wedding to any country you like as long as you have d money, stop hating
