Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party have begun moves to join the All Progressive Congress that was formed last week.
It was learnt that the affected PDP members are already pressing the necessary buttons to be part of the merger that brought the Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change, All Progressive Grand Alliance and All Nigeria Peoples Party together as APC.
It was gathered that the affected politicians in the ruling party were making the moves to the APC a secret, in order not to be accused of anti-party activities.
A member of one of the opposition parties involved in the merger told SUNDAY PUNCH that he had received calls from some members of the PDP on how they could join the APC.
The source, who did not want to be mentioned, said negotiations were still ongoing on how to accommodate the progressives in the PDP.
He said, “It is not that we will not accommodate them, but the truth is that, it is too early to start bringing in every person to a new political party that has a clear objective of saving the country from an imminent collapse.
“We know there is a serious crisis in the PDP and some of the ruling party’s members may want to join the APC. But we will be careful in handling the issue.”
Similarly, the National Organising Secretary of the CPC, Mr. Yusuf Salihu, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH in a telephone interview, explained that some PDP members were happy with the recent merger.
Pointing out that though the APC would not bar the PDP members from joining the new party, Salihu insisted that the newcomers would have to stay behind, watch and support the objectives of the APC.
“Nigerians are happy with the merger. Even some members of the PDP are happy with the merger of the opposition parties. They want to join us; we will accommodate them because they are Nigerians, but if they come, they will stay behind,” he stated.
Salihu said that the calibre of people in the APC showed that the new party was interested in the growth of the common man.
The APC, according to Salihu, will take over power in 2015 with the aim of solving the problem of insecurity, harsh economy and poverty affecting the larger population of the country.
