FG plans parks for tankers

Federal Government has said it will build parks for trailers and tankers to check indiscriminate parking by heavy duty vehicles on major roads in the country.

The government said it had directed the Federal Road Safety Corps to work with stakeholders to come up with an action plan on the provision of such parks.

President Goodluck Jonathan stated this at an international conference on road safety management in Africa organised by the FRSC to mark its silver jubilee in Abuja on Monday.

Jonathan, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, said the government had in the last three years increased the capital and overhead budgetary allocations of the FRSC by about 300 per cent, while its staff strength had increased by about 40 per cent.

The President said the Federal Executive Council had approved the incorporation of road safety education in the nation’s school curriculum, while the policy on standard school bus for the country had also been approved.

He added that the government also acceded to the 1949 Vienna and Geneva Conventions on road markings and signage to which Nigeria hitherto was not a signatory.

He said, “As part of our continuing demonstration of commitment to safer road environment, I have directed the Corps Marshal to work in concert with relevant stakeholders to come up with action plan on the provision of parks for trailers and tankers.”

Jonathan promised that his government would continue to support the FRSC to render such assistance to save African countries from threats of road carnage.
