Osun pays N340m WAEC bill for 33, 000 students

OSUN State Government has paid N340 million as West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, fees for 33,000 final year students in all the public secondary schools in the state.

The fees were paid for all the SS3 students, without subjecting them to another qualifying examination which used to be the practice.

Addressing journalists after the 66th Executive Council meeting, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Sunday Akere, said the payment involved examination fees, registration for laboratories and other charges.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Executive Council has approved the award of a N91,616,681 contract for the supply of  medical consumables to all the health facilities in the state.

It equally awarded a N1,059,427,861 contracts for the electrification projects of 24 rural and sub-rural communities across the state.

Three of the electrification projects, costing N83,669,378 would be handled through direct labour, while the remaining 21, costing N975,758,482 would be handled by different contractors.

After the payment of the fees, he said the state government had received complaints from some parents of exclusion of their wards from among the beneficiaries, saying that the Deputy Governor, Otunba Titilayo Laoye-
Tomori who is Commissioner for Education, had been mandated to ensure a review of the payment to accommodate genuine complaints.  On the new school uniform introduced by the present administration, Akere said

“We have received complaints about students being given sizes that are either too big or too small. Teachers should allow the students to test the uniforms before taking them away. If it is not of their sizes, the students have the right to return them and take their sizes.

“No teachers must force students to take the uniform that is not of their sizes. We want to appeal to teachers to cooperate with the government to make success of this project.

“Any teacher found given out uniform indiscriminately without considering the sizes would be punished for it.”
