It has been revealed that some Nigerian graduates taking part in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme can hardly communicate in English Language.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brig-Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Affia made the revelation in Ilorin, capital of Kwara state, while addressing the 2013 batch A pre-mobilisation workshop.
He said that the level of academic deficiency among corps members had heightened corps rejection and redundancy.
“Unfortunately too, we have corps members who can hardly communicate in English Language let alone being able to teach in the classrooms.
” This worrisome development has resulted in a situation whereby members of the public wrongly condemn the NYSC for the poor academic standards displayed by these corps members,’’ Okore- Affia said.
He said the inability of academic institutions to produce eligible corps members had become a herculean task for NYSC management.
He added, “going through the figures presented for mobilisation by Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs) in year 2012,it was discovered that many exceeded the admission quota approved by regulatory bodies by as much as 500 per cent in extreme cases.
Okore-Affia said many principals of schools and other employers were ejecting corps members posted to their schools and offices and stressed that it was difficult to even re-orientate such corps members. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Lol....very true...have seen enough of them, especially those from the eastern part of the country...
ReplyDeleteShould we then prove this theory right which states;when the question set is not proportional to the stuff gathered expo and girraffing remain constant no matter how tight the security is except the student deserves failure.Hahahaha!!!
ReplyDeleteSo many from the Eastern part cannot even write their names....
ReplyDeleteBehold! Degree-men. They hate NCE and Diploma-men. Now among these so-called Bsc, B.ed comes shame. Anyway, they are shameless...Hahaha
ReplyDeleteI work in Lagos and my colleagues who are yorubas with Masters can't speak correct english,,,, they can't even write a simple sentence ... I keep wondering! So it's not only about the easterners, it's everywhere.

ReplyDelete... yet literacy level remains higher in the east. so its either the people that carried out the research are fools or whoever writes a comment here against the easterners is an idiot. i served in Katsina, Dutsinma to be precise and currently live n Lagos. i have had a feel of the three regions.
ReplyDeleteIt is a fundamental problem. Government charted schools are not playing their appropriate regulatory roles as sub-standard schools are springing up and employing unqualified teachers.
ReplyDeleteOnce pupils cannot get it right from the start, it becomes hard to catch up as adults.
Another point is that our craze for certificates, in order to be gainfully employed, and politically relevant has made every Tom, Dick and Harry aspire for degrees. Everywhere in Nigeria is the same, everywhere.
Pls its not only from the easterners! Its everywhere! The northerners n westerners are nt excluded!
ReplyDeleteHere we go again with derision of easterners by some commentators on this forum. The above subject is a general problem that affects every part of the country, as a cosequence of the dismal state of education country-wide.People that make negative comments about easterners, on virtually every subject, should endeavour to tell us what part of the country they're from, so we can engage them on their negative traits accordingly. For instance, a supposed Master's Degree holder, of Yoruba origin, has just submitted a proposal for a project to me, in the most embarrassing written English, I'd expect from someone of his claimed education! Yet another Yoruba graduate staff of mine did not know what half a dozen was! Brethren, the East, whether you acknowledge the fact, or not, has produced at least 60% of the literrary force of this country; Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, J.P. Clark, Chukwuemeka Ike, John Munonye, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Gabriel Okara, Dilibe Onyeama,Elechi Amadi, Chinweizu, Pini Jason, and of recent vintage, Chimamanda Adichie, et al! So, please be objective when you're discussing national problems, and not let your fear, and/or jealousy of Easterners becloud your thinking. Ka chineke mezie okwu!
ReplyDeleteMuch ado about nothing. This is a non-issue. If the only virus eating up Nigeria is English language, we shall surely thank God. Chinese speak their language; Britons speak their english; ditto for France et al. Why cant Nigerians be real and proud of theirs? Does God know you as Englishman that you should make your mother tongue inferior? Your language is your identity dont toy with it. Dont support neo-colonialism. The authorities in Nigeria ar agents of Oyibo imperialism. Speak your language; you cannot know english totally because it is not yours
ReplyDeleteThis problem of English is why we have d 6-3-3-4 form of education. After pry 6 (most parents even make their kids leave pry sch in pry 5), government expects students after Jss 3 to chose vocational courses if their brain can not carry serious subjects for SSC. Parents found a way around it by 'special centres' and even bribing teachers for marks. They want to be parents of doctors, lawyers, engineers etc at all cost. Those of us whose children are professionals engaged private ghanaian teacher that taught our kids and neighbours' kids. Parents please help ur kids from d scratch not waking up later and looking for 'short cuts'. Long live nigeria.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 8:59 AM, ignoring u might make some people like you, who happen to be the subject of this news story, believe that you have just pointed out a "breakthrough" punctuation error above.
ReplyDeleteI don't trade words with learners. Look elsewhere for your teacher.
