A woman, Mrs. Modinat Ibrahim, yesterday fainted after a fire razed her provision and cosmetics store at Alowonle, Adigbe in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Her husband’s furniture workshop, situated in the same vicinity, was not spared.
Mrs. Ibrahim, who replenished her stock on Saturday with goods worth over half a million naira, fainted when she saw that her shop was among others burnt by a fire, which gutted a shop close to hers.
She was revived by sympathisers, who poured water on her before taking her to Hope Hospital in Adigbe, where she is receiving treatment.
Five other shops were also razed by the fire, which some people said might have resulted from faulty electrical appliances.
Another victim, Mrs. Yahya Nasimot, said she lost 150 crates of eggs, bags of rice, two freezers and a power generating set to the fire.
She said: “I just stocked up the shop and most of the items were bought on credit. I was hoping to go out and sell them on Monday (today) before the unfortunate incident.”
Spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mr Kareem Olanrewaju said the fire started from Mr. Adisa Ibrahim’s furniture shop and spread to others.
Olanrewaju said the timely intervention of his men and officials of the State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to residential buildings and a filling station.
Also yesterday, there was a fire at a hostel in Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi–Aba, but it was put out before it caused damage.
There was also a fire at the Trade Fair Complex, Oke Mosan. It was said to have been caused by rodent hunters, who set a nearby bush ablaze.
Director of the Ogun State Fire Service Abidoye Ajileye said they responded to four fires yesterday.
He said: “We received four calls almost at the same time and we have only three vehicles. We lack personnel and equipment and urge the government to intervene.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
