Buhari’s comments on Emir’s attack reckless – Presidency

The Presidency, on Tuesday, described the comments made by a former Head of State and National Leader of the Congress for Progressive Change, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday’s attack on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, as “reckless”.

Describing Buhari’s comments also as “opportunistic”, the Presidency warned politicians, especially members of the opposition, not to use the attack to make cheap political statements.

It also noted that the comments by Buhari and that of the Nigeria Labour Congress were “irresponsible”.

Buhari, in a statement by the CPC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, had condemned the attack, saying, “The country was not just under an ominous cloud of insecurity but that its citizens were also victims”.

Reacting to the comments, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said, “The statement by Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, his party, the CPC, is unfortunate, reckless and opportunistic”.

Okupe added, “Any attempt to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and members of his family is irresponsible.

“Though, the attack itself is regrettable, it is difficult at present to blame it on the Boko Haram or terrorism or in fact, on some criminal elements within the society that hid under the spate of insecurity in the state to perpetuate this heinous crime”.
On the NLC remarks, Okupe said the union ought to be non-partisan and should see things with nationalistic view.

He said, “We are not impressed by similar stance by the NLC that is supposed to be non-partisan in nature and in all approaches.

“There is indeed absolutely no need to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered emir.”

The Presidential aide however said the Police and other security agencies were working to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the attack.
Noting that crime was inevitable in any country, Okupe said when crime happens in the United States, none of its citizens blames President Barak Obama for the attack.

He added, “At that moment in the United States, no American citizen or group blamed the killings on the President or the government, in spite of avalanche of security apparatus and expertise available to the United States Government.”
He said what any responsible government would do was to ensure that the perpetuators of these heinous crimes were apprehended, arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of the land.

Calling for the pooling of resources and information, Okupe urged the citizenry to support government and the security agencies to ensure the arrest of the criminal elements.

  3. The comments attributed to the General and the labour congress picture the reality on the ground. It does not call for the kind of reaction the government is giving to it. Insecurity is a present and worrisome challenge for us all.

  5. Keep on belittling your self, Alhaji Buhari! Are you the only one that has ruled this country? Why is it that only you always makes trouble for this Government and indeed the Country? Gowon, Shehu Shagari, Babangida,Shonekon, Abdulsalami. Are you better than these respected past leaders? If you cause war for this nation, which one will you or your bedfellows rule? Leave our President alone. He may not be the best now, but posterity will tell!

  9. Chile, 1.23pm above, if you know Buhari very well, you won't say the above comments on him. The question is why is it that Buhari's comment always attract gravity from ASO ROCK, while OBJ 's comment that is even heavier nowadays attract no attention. the answer is because the only person that can remove PDP from ASO ROCK that a poor Nigerian still have small hope on is him. Forget about religious/tribal bigotry and lets face reality because the high level of corruption, poverty, insecurity, unemployment, kidnapping etc infilterated on land by this PDP led govt is non respecta of any tribe/religion. if you are in the north, you will agree with late Azizza that nothing is boko haram. PDP is the boko haram. problems are all over Nigeria. if you don't have this problem at your end you have that. Buhari has never call for violence not to talk of war. All those negative things you hear about Buhari are PDP CREATION. His personal driver and his cooks today are still xtains.pls note

  10. Don't mind them, the little opportunity they have is to criticise the govt so as to win favour from the masses. Not knowing that the insecurity from the north has distroyed all their good records.Since they choose to remain silence it shows that they are cooperating(harborer or suporters) of BH.Mind you,you won't win the favour of nigns with this heartless altitude.

  11. Warning! Warning!! Warning!!! Pls men of wisdom assist me as a matter of urgency. Oh! We shld take care with certain globalizatn issues & collaboration. Dia are serious external influence & efforts on developing nations to disintegrate & instigate crises alike to weaken dem 4 anoda planned logical & gradual invading & slavery. Who provide weapons, sell & distribute same to all manners of groups? Wen dey 1st used military to achieved al dey want and wen dey found out again dat military as spread out is given dem hard time dat is y the gradual shift to the imposing democracy again according to dia dictates. World politics, do we tink dat the developed will neva allow the developing to develop? 4 radical change & striking shake 4 Africa & to we Nigerians to take the lead & beta save our nation is to 1st send foreigners packing 4 a limited time 4 us to critically luk 4 way forward & any half cas will not be part of the caucus decision. Thereafter dat we can then allow any foreigner according to clear terms & conditions subjected to renewal with time to us.
Internally, Ce hw we only claimed to be religious, moral, decent, discipline, educated, learned & civilized, if we are not clearly deceiving ourselves, I challenge Nigerians in particular & the world in general dat if we are not worshippers of devil & demons then we shld prove it wrong & completely ban & with hard laws on jst some of this evil things inimical to our society causing societal menace such as hard drugs (Indian hemp, cocaine etc), hard alcoholism along the varying energy drinks & it associates etc. & capital punishment on corruption & remove impunity. Do we know hw deadly is corruption & its attendant problems? Corruption is a silent killer, fast in killing many lives in silent & an economy. Or is dia any religion or any moral value or education in support of it? Yet we acclaim to one religion or the other to ourselves or we easily said we are moral, educated, discipline & all sort. Are we been jst to ourselves? Dis the root of our problems & we shld stop round abouting it. See hw we are wronging ourselves. If it continue as it dominate & we fail or presume to get it, is den a clear indications of clear devil & demons worshipping & of all our claims dat head any society towards a critical danger zone. The reality is that no gain, no gud but jst an illusion of a mere mirage if the right thing is not done, we still be waking each time & meet reality waiting. An aggregation of the whole made the world scientists, engineers & technologists as all “other smart ways” failed to resort for making an “alternative earth” the mars habitable, have we still make a headway or has it been achieved or we already in the mars planet? & wait, we are waiting…
