Yesterday, NigerianEYE put up a post exposing the poor and deplorable conditions of the dormitories, toilets and the environment generally at the police training college, Lagos. (IF YOU MISSED IT CLICK HERE)
It appears the President today decided to see things for himself today as he made a surprise stop to inspect the police college.
On the way to an ECOWAS meeting in the Ivory Coast, President Goodluck Jonathan's plane was diverted to Lagos where he made a surprise visit to the police college in Ikeja. Sources say that even his top aides were taken unaware by the unscheduled stop.
The police authorities were also caught unawares and had in fact rented the college to host a private wedding, which is illegal. President Jonathan demanded that the top brass explain these actions to which they had no sufficient answers. Upon hearing this the President immediately commenced an inspection of the college, starting with the student hostels where he discovered dilapidated conditions including no beds and toilets in the rooms.
The President and his entourage, including the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone Two, Mamman Tsafe, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, drove into the college at about 3pm and parked in front of the Sports Store.
From there,he walked to the hostels. He also inspected the women’s hostels, the kitchen, the dining halls facing the parade field and the officers’ mess.
Security was tight with armed soldiers and policemen deployed in strategic places in the college.
As he left the mess to enter his car, he suddenly paused and faced CP Yerima to ask him a few questions.
By now, a crowd had gathered struggling to see the President and were at the same time hailing him.
He waved to them to acknowledge their greetings.
Then came the first question for the College Commandant: How was Channels TV able to penetrate and record the mess without detection?
The CP had no answer.
The second question followed: When was the recording done. Again there was no answer.
The Commandant turned to his deputy and other senior officers to assist him in answering the President’s questions, but none was able to help him out.
The President then quipped: “This is a calculated attempt to damage the image of the government, as the college is not the only training institution in the country.”
He soon entered his car and left.
After the President’s departure, the college Commandant met briefly with his officers before he too took his leave.
Senior officers later gathered in groups to review the visit.
Some of policemen in the college who pleaded for anonymity were happy at the President’s visit which they said would help in reversing the fortunes of the college.
They called for the probe of the trainees’ welfare in the last five years. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteGood for GEJ .
As a president , you are number one public servant in your country , which means you must know what is happening in each sector.
God bless Nigeria
Mr president, with due respect, sack everybdy on duty, with this tell me y they will not take bribe when they come out. MIMI
ReplyDeleteWe also need such visits to our public hospitals,he won't believe the deplorable state of these hospitals and the absence of both medical and other staff. That is why people who can afford private ones patronize them and those who cannot ,die at the public ones.
ReplyDeletemr president, this is the kind of visit we need in our public institution. The govt workers always play with thier job.take action now!
ReplyDeletei really wish dis type of unplanned visit wil take place in all sector, especially hospital so dat d president can see tins on his own nd know wat is happening in d country.
ReplyDeleteGod saves Mr President
ReplyDeleteI had been posting comments in the last 3 days, arising from the day I read that the minister of defence nearly slummed during the army remembrance day, that Force in Nigeria remain the most corrupt Department in Nigeria..quote me by my words,Allocation given to them is being shared among the top officers, none of them can claim exception ,with ghost name among their pay list, but I don't know why my comments refuse to be published.Meanwhile is mr President angry because Channels TV did a wonderful job?let mr President clarify his question to know if truly he is in support of what his men were doing
ReplyDeleteWhy the question, How did Channel TV get the info without them knowing and secondly, why the question; Is that the only institution in the country ?
ReplyDeleteGood one, Mr. President kudos for this visit. More of such will spark revival in most sectors. I love this game GEJ.
ReplyDeleteI am disappointed once again @ Mr President, d question of hw channel tv entered and do all d records were irrelevant.l think Mr. President should ask why poor infrastructure and poor welfare .
ReplyDeleteIt is either Jonathan is scared that Boko Haram supporters in the police hierarchy may blow his brains out for reprimanding its rank and file or he has just proven to be what he is: inept. It is inconceivable that a President would condone sloppiness of this magnitude in a key federal institution. Are media houses supposed to cover for the failure of his government? The first citizenship is certainly too deep an end for a misfit Jonathan to have dived in.
ReplyDeleteSimply undemocratict enquiry 4rm mr. President, he could have award national honour to the producer of that report on police college Ikeja than showing his anger over the coverage, a commission of enquiry shld be set up 2 ask 5 past IGPs and the present one, how police allocations were spent, anyone found wantin shld be dealt with.
ReplyDeleteSimilarly, this kind of visit is needed to inspect NRC during either the morning or evening service operation. This must be carried out when train is moving on the track to witness what the masses face in the operation of NRC.
