Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram sect attacked the Nigerian
Prison Service (NPS) Farm Centre, Maiduguri, with improvised explosive devices (IED) and petrol-bombs at about 12pm on Thursday, freeing several inmates from detention.
The farm centre, which is used for farming and reformation of inmates by NPS, is located on Maiduguri-Gamboru/Ngala Road in the outskirt of the state's capital.
Other facilities destroyed by the gunmen included office blocks, clinic and toilets and bathrooms used by the inmates.
An eyewitness and resident of the farm said "I believe the target of the Boko Haram members was to free the inmates detained at the farm centre," adding " there was confusion during the attack. Apart from the sporadic Gunshots, the attackers used explosives in setting the farm ablaze."
Spokesman of Joint Task Force (JTF), Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, confirmed the incident.
He, however, denied that there was jailbreak."A few prisoners on skill acquisition programme and who were at the farm were attacked. While they ran away, some others returned to the detention centre," Musa said.
