Arepo oil pipeline vandalised again

BARELY two weeks after vandals burst the petroleum pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at Arepo area of Ogun State, which led to the death of 30 suspected vandals, another fire incident occured in the early hours of Wednesday following the activities of the vandals.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incident happened as a result of exchange of gunshots between officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the suspected vandals.

The NSCDC officials according to our findings were said to have been stationed to monitor the acts of the vandals since the last incident.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Ogun State command, Kareem Olanrewaju, said he could not confirm whether it was the same set of vandals who operated in the last incident that went back to operate on the pipelines.

“Officers of NSCDC were stationed to patrol the area since the last incident. We have also carried out series of operations there successfully with the arrest of some suspected vandals and seizure of exhibits.

“The NSCDC commandant is already at the spot as some of our men were attacked in another operation around Iperu/Ogere area, some of them were injured and have been taken to the hospital.

“In view of this, more armed personnel will be deployed as soon as we receive them from our headquarters as that will help us to cover the areas effectively,” he stated.

As of the time of filing this report, the extent of damage done on the pipeline could not be ascertained.
