Women, youths halt Shell production in Bayelsa

The Shell Petroleum and Development Company oil production facility in Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, was again shut down following a protest on Tuesday.

Our correspondent gathered that hundreds of aggrieved women, youths and community leaders seized the facility to protest against some unfulfilled demands.

The demonstration occurred barely 24 hours after youths of Twon Brass, Brass Local Government Area, barricaded Agip oil field in the area to demand the implementation of a Global Memorandum of Understanding.

The Agip oil field produces 500,000 barrel of crude oil per day.

Our correspondent gathered that over 21 communities and settlements in Nembe participated in the protest that rocked the Shell oil field.

It was gathered that the protest was led by the Chairman of the Oil and Gas Committee, Chief Nengi James, and the President of the Nembe Youths Association, Mr. Jonathan Omongor.

James, who spoke to our correspondent, said the communities resorted to the action after a meeting they had with SPDC officials failed to satisfy their demands.

He said the protest would continue until the company meet their demands which he described as legitimate.

He also said the company should employ the natives as well as give priority to firms owned by people in the kingdom in its award of contracts.

Spokesman for SPDC, Mr. Precious Okolobo, said the firm had enjoyed long-standing relationship with communities in Nembe.

He said the company had implemented projects that impacted positively on members of the community.

Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly has summoned two aides of the governor over an allegation that they were involved in the crisis at Obuna in Gbarain.

The aides were accused of causing disaffection in the community between the people and oil companies.

Femokowei in the motion, said the timely intervention of military operatives prevented a bloody clash in the community.
