Soldiers kill five Boko Haram men in Kaduna shoot out

Following intelligence alert, a detachment of the Army and other security forces yesterday demolished a bomb factory in Kaduna and killed five suspected Boko Haram members during the raid.
Dangerous weapons were retrieved from the factory, which was alleged to be an operational base of the sect in Rigasa in Kaduna North Local Government Area.
Some of the recovered weapons were 20 rolls of bomb detonating cords, Mark 4 rifles, and Pump Action Rifles.
According to the spokesman of the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. Sani K. Usman, in a statement last night, the bomb factory was located in a house in Rigasa.
The statement said: “The Army and the security agencies carried out a cordon and search operation at Rigasa in Kaduna North Local Government area and discovered a bomb making factory at a house, which was located off Makarfi Road in Rigasa
“On approaching the factory, some suspected terrorists opened fire and also threw already primed IED at the troops.
“The exchange of fire that ensued resulted in the death of five terrorists, while the two that sustained injuries are being treated.
“In line with out resolve to deter terrorists, the building housing the factory was demolished.”
He listed the items recovered at the factory as five Mark 4 Rifles, three Pump Action Rifles, 20 Rolls of Detonating Cords, 21 Nine Volts Batteries, two Remote Switches, one Testing Metre, five Assorted Daggers and Jackknives and other Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) materials.
The spokesman gave insight into how the bomb factory was located.
The statement added: “The operation followed a tip-off from well- meaning citizens.
“We wish to commend the courage of these well-meaning Nigerians and reiterate the 1 Division’s commitment to fighting terrorism.
“The actions of the Army and 1 Division in particular were aimed at ensuring peace and securing the lifes and property of law-abiding citizens of the country.
“We urge the public to always report suspicious movement to the concerned authorities.”
A top source in Abuja said it was a “ major pre-emptive strike recorded by security agencies.
“We had a strong lead that the terrorists wanted to unleash a fresh mayhem on Kaduna. This is why we need the vigilance of everybody.
“All security agencies have been mandated to comb suspected hideouts and operational bases of terror organisations. Kaduna has been under a 24-hour surveillance in the last two months.”
