Corpers Cause Mass Failure In Schools - Teachers Council

The Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abeokuta kicked against the posting of non-education graduate corps members to schools as teachers by the National Youth Service Corps.

The TRCN argued that this had been responsible for the mass failure of secondary school students in the Senior Secondary School Certificate and National Examinations Council in recent years.
The TRCN Head of Operations, Dr. Steve Nwokeocha, stated this at a pre-induction ceremony of 118 Professional Diploma in Education graduates at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Nwokeocha said only graduates of education should be posted as teachers to schools across the country.
He said, “What we are saying is that NYSC should make sure that only corps members who read education should be deployed in schools. Our council is against the deployment of non-education graduates in schools.
“The issue of having mass failure is a process. Part of the people contributing to the process are these corpers. It is an abuse of our profession.”
The TRCN head of operations stressed that graduates of other disciplines must under-go the programme before they could be deemed to have qualified as professional teachers.
He warned that any school that failed to comply with the regulations of the body might have their programmes de-registered.
The FCE, Osiele, Deputy Provost, Dr. Bolatito Adeniyi, who represented the Provost, said the programme was to formally induct the graduands into the teaching profession.

  2. I may not subscribe to this. Bcos I was a non-education graduate posted to a college of education in the north.I taught with passion and my students passed in the subjects I took them. The failure of students in external exams is not the graduates who are not education based but the system.Let's make provision for good infrastructure, conducive learning environment, training and retraining of teachers and motivate students and let them know the need for hardwork and dilligence as a panacea to failure in any internal or external examinations

  3. whats d percentage of Teachers to corpers in the state? Infact, its a shame for them to even say this out. They are blaming corpers for students' failure when they are their supervisors. If you cannot do your work effectively then you should be sacked.
Most of them are unfit to be called teachers.
