FCSC renovates 26 toilets with N28m

THE Senate, yesterday, described as ridiculous a total sum of N28 million spent this year by the Federal Civil Service Commission, FCSC, to renovate 26 toilets facilities.

The Senator Aloysius Etok, PDP, Akwa Ibom North-West-led Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service was also told that N18 million was expended to renovate the commission’s offices in 2012 and N25 million went to ITC equipment for the offices.

Disclosing this when she led others to defend the 2013 budget of the Commission, Chairman of FCSC, Deaconess Joan Olatoyosi, informed the commission that over N129 million was approved for the commission to conduct the 2012 interview and promotion of civil servants, adding that N70 million was released by the Federal Government to complement the N59 million earlier released by government to conduct the exercise, just as she explained that this led to the promotion of 1,229 workers out of the 4,034 civil servants interviewed.

Reacting to her explanations, Etok who described the commission’s expenditure as a clear case of robbery, however, wondered why it could go such extra mile in defrauding government in such manner, adding: “As a chairman of this committee, let me say here that we disagree with this and on this note, we request to meet with all those involved in this contract.

“We, the politicians are the ones that people call thieves, nobody calls you, the civil servants thieves.”

Speaking further, the Commission’s Chairman however denied insinuation that staff of the Commission collect N500,000 from any applicant as kickback for employment and challenged anyone with proof to come forward.

She said she was hearing the rumour for the first time just as she claimed she had been receiving commendations from prominent Nigerians for the transparency in the affairs of the commission.

  1. Reports have it that seventy percent of our recurrent expenditure go by way of salaries to politicians and civil servants, while thirty percent is earmarked for capital expenditure including education, agric, power and steel, works and housing, and every other ministry and government agency in the country, a substantial amount of which still stolen. Where is the provision for citizen's social safety net among others. Tell me how we will progress? It is a hopeless country, really!
