Electricity: FG targets 6,873MW by 2013

The power authorities on Friday predicted that Nigeria would generate 6,873 megawatts of electricity by the end of 2013.

The Chief Executive Officer of Egbin Power Plc, Mr. Mike Uzoigwe, gave this hint at the signing of a performance agreement between the Minister of State for Power, Mrs. Zainab Kuchi and the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Dere Awosika.

The chief executive officers of the organisations in the ministry also signed the performance agreements with the minister.

Uzoigwe said the successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria would generate 3,879mw, while the National Independent Power Producers and Independent Power Producers would generate 2,500mw.

The Egbin Power Plc boss said the target was agreed upon during a meeting attended by the minister, the presidential task force and the chief executive officers of all successor companies in which the capability and performance of all generation company stations were reviewed.

He said, “The availability of gas for the thermal stations is key to realising this projection. It is pertinent to note that some NIPP units have been fully commissioned but cannot run due to gas supply associated problems. The Geregu power plants still experience gas supply shortage.”

Kuchi said the Federal Government would resolve the labour crisis trailing the process of privatising the power companies.

She said, “Today is remarkable as the Federal Ministry of Power takes a bold step in signing performance contract with all the chief executive officers of generation, transmission, as well as regulatory, training and reform institutions. This is in line with Mr. President’s commitment to deliver to Nigerians.

“In terms of labour issues, I will not say we are absolutely on top of the issue but we are focused. We are very focus and we are about taking an alternative measure in order to ensure that we finalise that.
