The Nigerian police force in Enugu on Monday arrested over 500 persons for allegedly being part of the purported re-declaration of Biafra as a sovereign state.
The group under the aegis of Biafra Zionist Movement had converged on an open field in Coal Camp area of Enugu where the leader, Mr. Ben Onwuka, addressed them.
However, after Onwuka’s address, policemen led by the Enugu Central Police Station Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Ike Mba, arrested him and other members of the group, who displayed Biafran, American and Israeli flags.
The suspects were arraigned before a court and remanded in police custody afterwards.
Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the arrests.
He said, “No fewer than 500 persons believed to be members of BZM, which is also believed to be a faction of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, have been arrested by the police.
“The group was led by one Ben Onwuka and the members were arrested at Akwata, off Agbani Road, Enugu. They were arrested with 61 Biafran flags, 13 berets, three bands and eight BZM forms.”
While addressing the crowd, Onwuka said, “It is clear that the security of lives and property of Biafran people is no longer guaranteed in the entity called Nigeria.
“Therefore, we have resolved to re-declare our independence today based on the mandate given to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu on May 30, 1967 to provide our people security according to international law.
“It is clear that our people’s right to worship, according to our Christian faith, is no longer guaranteed. Therefore, we Biafra people have resolved to opt out of Nigeria.
“Today, the re-birth of the Republic of Biafra is finally actualised.
“On the international arena, the Republic of Biafra would establish and maintain a very pro-Israel international relations. Biafra would consider an attack on Israel and the Jewish people as an attack on Biafra.”

ReplyDeleteThis is double standard!
ReplyDeleteWhat is good for the goose should be good for the gander. Why didn't Jonathan order for the arrest of Bayelsans over the the launch of a Bayelsa flag and anthem?
It is clear that the security of lives and property of Biafran people is no longer guaranteed in the entity called Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteThe unity of Nigerian State is not negotiable. Untited we stand as a Nation, divided we fall. We pray for our Igbo brothers & sisters eyes to be enlighten in order to see clearly the reason why God make this country one. Well balance, lacking nothing. God bless & keek the unity of Nigeria, protect the Jewis State of Israel & continue to keep America as his own people.
ReplyDeleteThe country is a failed state yet you are still adamant to impose unconsulted nationhood on people. Even the USSR collapsed so wake up to that reality. If you do not consult with the people they will resort to their right of self determination. With the type of Igbo bashing and continous mass killings that has been going on, I am baffled why nigerians are not keen to follow up their hatred and agree the Igbos to be gotten rid off from the nigerian entrapment. Why do we persecute MASSOB type of Igbo groups that are peaceful and yet get on our knee to be begging boko haram, mend and the likes? Oh, I know...they are not violent and we fear that the freedom of the Igbos to determine their own true destiny and not have puppet pharisee type of sellout Igbos as leaders (rulers) they Igbo nation will be a redemption to the whole black race.
DeleteWhat do you expect from a weak and clueless Govt? any foolish can declar his family as a sovereign state.
ReplyDeletewhy the arrest?have they arrested the boko haram who are terrorisig the state for creation of islamic republic
ReplyDeleteHere are some rights conferred by the Universal declaration of Human rights UNFORTUNATLY NIGERIA HAS NEVER ACCEPTED THESE RIGHTS FOR HER PEOPLE

Article 20(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association. (2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.
Article 21(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives. (2) Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country. (3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
NIGERIA IS A FAILED FRAUD POLICE STATE.
Only her sons and daughters can change that.
Nigerians fear and hate the Igbos but in the end all this will turn around on its head and lead to freedom. The bottom cannot hold anymore
DeleteGovernment gives publicity to a non event by making arrests.
ReplyDeleteWhat cannot sustain must surely end. Unless their is a revolutionary change to Nigerian governance and political process, then Nigeria will become a failed state. The road we are currently on has only one destination.
Many in Liberia and Ivory Coast could not believe that their country was falling apart, until they were running for their lives. The same in Lebanon in the 60s (Nassir Tableb talks of him growing up with his father staying in a hotel in London for 25 years, expecting to go back to Lebanon in the next few months.) and in Somali Land. Fish really discover water last.
Biafrans should just relax and be patient, when the time is right their will be no one to oppose them going.
We Northerners a happy with this declaration.Let all the Ibos in the north start moving back home since they have their own country now
ReplyDeleteCan someone post the map of Biafra?
ReplyDeleteFOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe've been too lazy for too long, let every people discover their destinies or let there be provincial governments, as we have in Canada,Spain and other developed countries of the world. Enough is enough
ReplyDeletelike the Achebe's all-time Book and master piece 'things fall appart' Nigeria's centre can no longer hold. we would have all done better as independent sovereingn nations than this obviously clumsy amalgation of people with irreconcillabe inclinations. i wonder how long it will take us to understand ourselves as one and the same after over 50 yrs of nationhood. the scramble for national cake has not allowed our leaders to look at the plight of the poor masses since they are the only ones that benefit from this arrangement.
ReplyDeleteThe Vision is for appointed time. At God's own time everything will fall in line. Lets keep praying. Why staying too long in a sinking boat? Only few Nigerian benefiting from this devilish, selfish corporate governance can applause the system. Masses are dying daily. If separation will help us, carry on, however, make it peaceful.
ReplyDeleteThe idiots are doing it once again. Never learning from there mistakes. I think they must have promised three-quarter of Nigeria's oil wealth to Isreal before soliciting for there support. Thats why Africans especially of southern Nigerian extract are always considered as baboons by the advance countries. Anyway, Isreal are as intelligent as they are cunning. They may decide to lure the unsuspecting Ndigbos into a pit they may never come out of. Isreal never protects the rights of others except if it unavoidably affects them directly
