Nigerian Teenagers Develop Urine-Powered Generator

14-year-old Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, and Faleke Oluwatoyin, together with 15-year old Bello Eniola showcased their unique innovation at this year's Maker Faire Africa held in Lagos, Nigeria.

The system works by pouring urine into an electrolytic cell to separate the hydrogen. The filtered hydrogen then goes into a water filter for purification where it then be pushed into a gas cylinder. Afterwards, the gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax in order to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas. Lastly, the purified hydrogen gas is then pushed into the generator to provide power to the bulb.

The girls claim that one liter of urine is enough to power the generator for six hours. Not bad for an alternative source of electricity! The urine-powered generator could prove to be useful, especially in Africa, where power shortages are rampant.

  9. There are many natural sources of hydrogen gas eg: water.Since its hydrogen gas they need to power the generator, they should also think of a way to separate hydrogen from water. Nice work they did though.

  10. if it were in advanced nation, they would have been patented. bet me, this may be the last u will hear about this invention. many more ineresting achievements have been swept under the carpet like that.

  11. Well, this could help to reduce urine smell on the streets of Lagos and other Nigerian cities. Not to think of cashing-in, on ones urine. However, the authorities should ensure that cash revenue from sales of General and Teaching Hospitals Patients' gallons/litres of urine are reinvested in upgrading the Hospitals facilities (manpower, equipment, building, etc).

  15. Seriously, these girls have done a tremendous job. Hmm im so sorry for nigerian governments. Nigerian government does not have faith in their citizens that is why you see them inviting expatriates to develop or handle the technology of this country. when this type of things are showcased they only clap and give you Okada as first prize to show that the person have done well. Anyway, I heard that the UK government are interested in these girls. Girls dont waste anytime, go with any country that is interested in your innovations and do yourself and your family proud. Go Gals.

  16. I would like to make reference to the first anonymous remark which has no bearing to the innovation of these promising girls. I would strongly advise Nigerian Eye to please restrict what they should publish. By publishing this publication is an encouragement of fraudstars in the country. The publisher should please take note of my observation.

  17. ...but there is alot to ponder. firstly, did they fabricate the part to the generator itself, bcos the parts should be able to run with the h2 gas. secondly, for the contraption to work it will have to be handy, it seem to be too elaborate.

i believe they technolgy should be for the development of a generator that runs on hydrogen from urine and not development of hydrogen from urine.

i think we should ask their teachers about this 'science project'scheme. i think it is to eventually project the imags of the teachers and not the students...

lets ponder...however i think the students must have been brilliant and intellient for them to be used by the teachers in the first place.
