Nigeria-Niger boundary, most peaceful –NBC

Nigeria-Niger on the map of AfricaThe National Boundary Commission said on Friday that the Nigeria-Niger Republic boundary was the most peaceful border in the area.

The Director General of the commission, Dr. Muhammad Ahmad, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Ahmad said though the boundary witnessed few cases of disputes, efforts were on to prevent such development from escalating.

The NBC boss said communities on the border between the two nations had been relating “very well.”

He said, “Composite authorities like the state government on our side and regional government on the Niger side have been relating cordially.

“People will believe that both countries are from one family due to the way the countries are relating over border disputes.’’

Ahmad said both countries had local bilateral committees whose component authorities represented them on border issues.

He noted that the committees met often to solve some of the problems, such as security which might cause tension among the farm lands in both countries.

Ahmad identified re-channelling of Komadugu Yobe River Basin, located between Northern Nigeria and Southern Niger Republic as the major area of dispute between both countries.
He said the commission would redress replacement of missing boundary pillars in the areas that deserved to be replaced.

He also said the Nigeria-Cameroon Mixed Commission would hold its 30th session in December.
“We will attend to some of the disagreement issues and some skipped areas. We will also ensure that the demarcation exercise takes place while we attend to other necessary issues,’’ he said.

He said the 10-year-old mixed commission had done wonderfully well.
