The Nigerian Communications Commission has stopped promos and lotteries by GSM firms in the country, to address the poor quality of telecoms services.
NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, said in a statement on Monday that it had obtained credible information that the promos and lotteries were responsible for the poor quality of service.
Affected by the ban are Globacom Ltd (operators of Glo Mobile), MTN, Intercellular Nigeria Plc, Visafone, Etisalat, Airtel and Multilinks.
The commission also stated that the firms were engaging in anti-competitive practices with their low tariffs.
That on-net call was now being offered by Operators at tariffs well below the prevailing inter-connect rates thereby introducing anti-competitive practices and behaviour.
Termination of calls were becoming increasingly difficult from one network to another and overall consumer experience on the networks has become very poor thereby making it extremely difficult for subscribers to make calls successfully,” the statement said.

The companies have been having a field day, making their billions of naira profit while giving Nigerians the poorest of services unimaginable, sharp practices that can only take place in a commercially permissive environment like ours.
ReplyDeleteMtn is d no1 culprit etisalat is k in terms of service delivery,bt i support d ban on all promo
ReplyDeleteOnly in Ninja that poor services of GSM service providers are over looked. Stiffer penalties should be given to defaulters
ReplyDeleteNice move by NCC
ReplyDeleteAl ds r formats,so de cancelled it wen mtn is about 2 gv dre so claimed plane 2 d winner nd glo is about 2 gv 24 million naira 2 a grand winner of text4million promo, wake up peeps.Al na scam. 101 NP NP
ReplyDeleteYea l support this move. This poor service mostly MTN has become unbearable with their useless 5* promo.
ReplyDeleteNCC has not gone far enough in this measure that is long overdue. They should also fix the tariff for calls to N5/minute. We have such a large population that these companies can still make profit. Small countries like Ghana are paying less for calls with far smaller populations. Stop this explioitation once and fo all!!!
ReplyDeleteU call 5* promo useless? My dear wake up, if it is useless, why d mass rush for it? As for me i enjoyed it and wished it never ended
ReplyDeleteThis is all about demand and supply. On-net calls are equivalent to intercom calls. Such calls should necessarily be cheaper as a rule because such calls don't attract inter-network settlement among operators. NCC should rather set telecoms infrastructural standards in relation to teledensity, not allow these Indians and co to import obsolescent equipment here.
ReplyDeleteAs for the other kind of promo, it is high time it was stopped. Operators want to prove themselves magnanimous only to employ pyramid schemes to rip off millions of unsuspecting Nigerians to pay an acquaintance, so-called "lucky winner" 0.00000000000001% of the loot, in gift or cash.
Worse still is the deluge of messages which has caused people like me to switch off at nights in order to catch some sleep. I sympathize with hypertensive patients, who were assailed by their messages!
Stopping promos will have no effect on the quality of services...duh#@
ReplyDeleteNCC is jst waking up shey?its only in naija dat these service providers move from one promo Ï„̅☺ d nxt witout worrying about d quality of their service. For me,I tink d promos shld be stopped as they are jst riping of innocent Nigerians!!mtshew**
ReplyDeleteI paid for internet access but can't make a connection, yet they want me to win an airplane, what'll I use it for? I've been waiting for this ban!
ReplyDeleteI think NCC should ensure that the tariff by telecommunication companies are brought to the bearest minimum so that everybody will able to make calls without necessarily waiting for promo. Fund for promo should be used in improving on the quality of services rendered.
ReplyDeleteI can see that NCC is unhappy with the low tariff promo by GSM firms. Did the GSM firms tell Mr. Ojobo that the rate they charge which according to him is below interconnection rate killing their business or profitability? He should pls concentrate on the poor quality of service and how to remedy it as well as lotteries etc and forget about low tariff been charged.
ReplyDeleteThanks be to God. I pray this translates to better services. NCC thanks for coming to our rescue.
ReplyDeleteInfact,by dtim my network started workn, all dis fake networks will find there levle, my network is FMTconect.
ReplyDeleteWhat is d business of NCC with low tarrif. If they keep it at a high rate will he like it. I can see that he don't wants the poor to make calls again. Nigerians be wise!
