Lagos state Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola yesterday expressed support for amendment to the 1999 Constitution to enable each state create its own police force.
Speaking at the flag off of the south west zonal public hearing, Fashola said “Issues like police must come under the devolution of power, but can also come in my view, under the debate of what is most important for us to deal with today and I think it is our national security, because without it, when we continue to live in fear, there is very little achievement that we can make.
“It is only in an atmosphere of peace and security that we can do businesses that we can move. Therefore I remain unrepentant and very clear in my mind that until each state is able to enforce its own laws, until then we may continue to be beset with those problems of national security.”
He argued that the Nigeria Police lack the required capacity to deal with issues such as rape and those are matters that the states can deal with.
On his part, Senate President David Mark stressed that the National Assembly has taken no position whatsoever as regards the proposed amendment saying that the idea of the public hearing is to collate views of Nigerians which will form the agenda for the review of the constitution.
