INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, had raised the alarm that political parties usually earmarked funds to bribe INEC and security agents during election periods.
But in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the Rivers State chapter of the ACN insisted that only the PDP was involved in such an act.
Though the statement signed by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Jerry Needam, described Jega’s ‘confession’ as belated, it added that those involved in bribing electoral officials and security agents were political parties that had access to public funds from oil windfall.
Needam stated that the INEC boss fell short of mentioning names in order to safeguard his job as the chairman of the electoral body.
The party’s spokesman said the startling pronouncement by the INEC chairman could be referring to no other political party, but the PDP.
Reacting to the party’s claim, the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. George Ukwuoma-Nwogbo, explained that the ACN was also involved in bribing INEC officials and security agents.
Ukwuoma-Nwogbo said it was wrong for the ACN to have given the impression that the manipulation of the election process was peculiar to the PDP.
He said, “The PDP will win in a free and fair election. The ACN is wrong to have pointed accusing fingers at the PDP. What the INEC chairman said was not peculiar to the ruling party. The ACN is also involved in the states they control.”
