Sheila Solarin, widow of foremost educator Tai Solarin dies at 82

Sheila Mary Sholarin, widow of Nigeria’s late foremost academician and social crusader, Dr. Tai Solarin is dead.
The English-born woman who founded the renowned Mayflower School with her husband in Ikenne, Ogun State, died this morning at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.
The English-born Mrs. Solarin was a dependable ally of her husband who spent a lifetime fighting as a voice for the downtrodden Nigerian masses.
She and her late husband had two children, Corin and Tunde
In recognition of their efforts towards ensuring that more people have formal education, the Solarins have received several awards and recognition, locally and internationally.
Sheila was knighted and awarded the Member of British Empire (MBE) in 2007 by Queen Elizabeth.
Two state-owned tertiary institutions were named after Dr. Solarin. They are; Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode and Tai Solarin College of Education ((TASCE), Omu-Ijebu.
Funeral arrangements for the late educator will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has mourned the death of Mrs Sheila Solarin, the widow of the late founder of Mayflower School, Ikenne, social critic and educationist, Dr Tai Solarin, who passed away today, 21st of October, 2012 at the age of 82.
In a press statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Funmi Wakama, Amosun described the demise of Mrs Solarin as most painful and a great loss to Ogun State and Nigeria in general.
According to the governor “Mama Solarin was a foremost educationist, a great teacher and disciplinarian who rendered an immeasurable service to the people of Ogun State and Nigeria through the Mayflower School. The school founded in 1956 became one of the best schools in the country and has produced many of the leading lights in our nation.
“Mrs Solarin was an exampler of that much-needed global spirit that sees beyond colour, race and religion in inter-relationships among peoples, nations and continents of the world,” the governor said. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
