The usual monthly environmental sanitation exercise will not be observed today in Lagos due mainly to the on-going celebration of the Ileya, muslim festival.
Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello who made this declaration, in Lagos, said the suspension of this month’s exercise was mainly to allow for hitch-free movement of persons, particularly those willing to travel for the Ileya.
The commissioner noted that, ‘cleanliness is next to Godliness’ we cannot but encourage cleanliness in all aspects of human endeavour and therefore enjoined all and sundry to ensure that the festival is celebrated in the cleanliest environment possible.”
He, however, urged Lagos residents to still clean their homes and immediate environments irrespective of the lifting of the restriction order which is only for the month of October as the monthly cleaning exercise will commence in November.
While wishing Muslim faithful happy celebration,Bello admonished residents to bag their refuse properly to allow for easy collection and disposal to designated dumpsites by LAWMA and PSP Operators.
The commissioner also assured that LAWMA would deploy men and equipment to ensure quick evacuation of waste generated during the festive period.
Bello also reminded Lagosians that the rains are still here and Lagos as a coastal state is susceptible to flooding. He advised residents in the city to desist from dumping waste into canals and drainages as the consequences of massive flooding being experienced across the nation is enough warning to discourage us from dumping refuse to drains and canals.
