People view the wealth of men of God from different angles. While some think there’s nothing bad living a good life filled with abundant wealth, others believe men of God are just supposed have enough, and that their calling doesn’t require excess.
Whichever way you choose to look at this, everyone has a right to their opinion.
Here are the five pastors Forbes think are the richest in Nigeria.
Bishop David Oyedepo |
1. Bishop David Oyedepo
Affiliation: Living Faith World Outreach Ministry, aka Winners Chapel
Estimated net worth: $150 million
David Oyedepo is Nigeria’s wealthiest preacher. Ever since he founded the Living Faith World Outreach Ministry in 1981, it has grown to become one of Africa’s largest congregations. The Faith Tabernacle, where he hosts three services every Sunday, is Africa’s largest worship center, with a seating capacity of 50,000. Oyedepo owns four private jets and homes in London and the United States. He also owns Dominion Publishing House, a thriving publishing company that publishes all his books (which are often centered on prosperity). He founded and owns Covenant University, one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary institutions, and Faith Academy, an elite high school.
Chris Oyakhilome |
2. Chris Oyakhilome
Church: Believers’ Loveworld Ministries, a.k.a Christ Embassy
Estimated net worth: $30 million – $50 million
Last year, the charismatic preacher was at the center of a $35 million money laundering case in which he was accused of siphoning funds from his church to foreign banks. Pastor Chris pleaded no wrongdoing and the case was eventually dismissed. His church, Christ Embassy, boasts more than 40,000 members, several of whom are successful business executives and politicians. Oyakhilome’s diversified interests include newspapers, magazines, a local television station, a record label, satellite TV, hotels and extensive real estate. His Loveworld TV Network is the first Christian network to broadcast from Africa to the rest of the world on a 24 hour basis.
Temitope Joshua |
3. Temitope Joshua
Church: Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN)
Estimated net worth: $10 million – $15 million
Nigeria’s most controversial clergyman is also one of its richest and most philanthropic. T.B Joshua heads the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN), a congregation he founded in 1987, which accommodates over 15,000 worshippers on Sundays. The Pastor has remained controversial for several years for his inexplicable powers to heal all sorts of incurable diseases, including HIV/AIDS, cancer and paralysis. For miracle-craving worshippers, it’s the perfect seduction. The church currently has branches in Ghana, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Greece. In the past three years, he has given over $20 million to causes in education, healthcare and rehabilitation programs for former Niger Delta militants. He owns Emmanuel TV, a Christian television network, and is close friends with Ghanaian President Atta Mills.
Matthew Ashimolowo |
4. Matthew Ashimolowo
Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC)
Estimated net worth: $6 million – $10 million
In 1992, Foursquare Gospel Church, a Nigerian church, sent Ashimolowo to open a satellite branch in London. But Pastor Matthew had other ideas and decided to set up his own church instead. Today, his Kingsway International Christian Center is reportedly the largest Pentecostal church in the United Kingdom. In 2009, the church posted profits of close to $10 million and assets worth $40 million. Ashimolowo earns an annual salary of $200,000, but his real wealth comes from varied business interests including his media company, Matthew Ashimolowo media, which churns out Christian literature and documentaries. Ashimolowo’s representatives did not respond to a request confirming his net worth and ownership of all these assets.
Chris Okotie |
5. Chris Okotie
Church: Household of God Church
Net worth: $3 million -$10 million
Pastor Okotie made his first success as a popular pop musician in the 80s. He found the light, embraced the bible and set up the Household of God Church, one of Nigeria’s most flamboyant congregations. His 5,000 member church consists predominantly of Nollywood celebrities, musicians, and society people. He contested and lost Nigerian presidential elections for the third time this year under the Fresh Party, a political party he founded and funds. An automobile lover, he owns a Mercedes S600, Hummer and Porsche among several others.

What is the net worth of Jesus?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: The net worth of Jesus is unquantifiable.... ''As he is, so are we in this world as his followers''. U cannot be serving God faithfully and still be stinking, our God is a pay master and not a task master. Despite of all the glory of Jesus, bible says that he was made poor so that we may be rich. Belivers we soon take over the total wealth of the earth... Watch-out!!! GLORY!
ReplyDeleteRubish!! Keep decievin urself and goin after earthly wealth. . . . .'u'l find it in d babas' as zebrudaya use 2say.
DeleteI have never heard such pathetic brainwashing. You are a victim of following the dogma of a religous cult. You are being exploited or you are exploiting desperate people
DeleteMr Anonymous 1. the net worth of Lord Jesus was seen before his crucifixion, his tunic, woven from top to bottom and without seam. It was all he had and bequeathed to his executioners. He was however fully rich in God since he had himself said that we store up treasures in heaven where there are no moths.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous no 2. His worth is really unquantifiable been God. But your theories are appalling. Do you sincerely in your redeemed heart think that God is more concerned about satisfying our wants and excesses(not needs) than the salvation of souls? Its contentment that is great gain or wealth, Even Christ said that a mans real worth does not consist in the abundance of possessions he owns().I do not judge any of these Pastors, Christ has already stated that judgement would begin in his house.
Bro Ephraim! ,
DeleteMay the good lord bless you and continue to increase you in His wisdom.
As I type and truly in sincerity of heart, I am near tears for the likes of Anonymous 2 for I know he most likely said all that out of a simple heart and there are multi-millions of such believers in Nigeria today. Just like Bro Paul the Apostle wrote to the people of Galatians, I asked in tears: who art bewithed you this much o Nigerians! Why is your hearts given to such foolishness from these Spiritual leaders? Why have ye stopped reading the Bible and meditating upon it to receive the true understanding from God but rather read the men of gods? Could it be that you all are indirectly fufilling Prophecy as spoken by Paul in his letter to Timothy - 2 Timothy 4: 3-5
See, I beseach you fellow Christians by the mercies of God, let us start reading our Bibles and seek it true interpretations from the Holy Spirit. Do not let this people deceive you any more, are you not free by the virtue of your believing? Why then do you put yourself under another bondage? Look Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:19 and I parapharased: if all your believing, all your giving your live to Christ is all about earthly riches, driving the best cars and living in affluence, if this is what your salvation is all about, ha! You are the most wrectched! From Apostle Paul's pespective as given by the Holy Spirit, there is no one on the surface of this earth that is as poor and wretched as such believer even in all those riches.
Our salvation is more than this! It is more than riches, healing, it is more than micracles, all this will come and fade away, notice that Jesus did all this before the Cross. If it had just been for these emphemeral things He wouldn't have needed to proceed to the Cross. Our Salvation is unto Enternity, its our reconciliation back to God (2 Corinthians 5:20).
I know some will read this and still disapprove it, I will continue to pray for God to open such persons eyes. Let us all start desiring Holiness without which no man shall see the lord. Let us seek His Kingdom, let us truly practise what the bible says. All those 1 naira, 5 naira, 100 naira, thousand naira and millions you donate to Churches, look around you and give it to Jesus. Am not against you funding the gospel but pls ensure your money is use truly for the gospel. If you are not sure, give your money to Jesus. You may ask but where is Jesus? My answer is He is around you all this while you just never noticed. I will not tell you though but give you this Scripture to go read (Mathew 25:35-46 and James 1:27). Don't let your Pastors decieve you, look for Jesus in that scripture and henceforth begin to give to Him.
In conclusion, I asked that Christians on this blogs read the life account of John Wesley, put it in google and read more about him, this are spiritual mentors we should emulate. And I have decided in my life to work his path. He has more to eat, more to ride a limousine but gave most away. An account said the Goverment tax collector wrote to him thinking he cheated in paying all his taxes but he wrote back saying he could not afford a golden spoon when someone is out there that have not eaten. This is someone that in it true sense can buy the best of the best but all was given to touch lives and as he preaches the gospel. He died with just a coat, his worn out shoes and clergy man dress. Open your inner eyes brothers and sisters, let the true light shines in, refuse to leave in bondage of this people and pray for more understanding.

If these men wealth are gotten in a godly way there is nothing wrong with it. After all being a minister of God does connote suffering or poverty
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 7.08 .
ReplyDeleteI believe life of Jesus is worth of emulation or is an example for believer ?
Dont deceive yourself .
Kindly examine so called pastor or man of God of our present era base on exemplary character (yardstick or benchmark )of Jesus.
I m not judging anybody , however , each an everyone of us should examine ourselves weather we are emulating Jesus or not.
Hope to see you after you mark yourself base on yardstick stated above .
Once again , dont deceive yourself.
When i grow up, i have to be a Pastor!
ReplyDeletevernity upon vernity all is vernity, what is the meaning of all this wealth? When some of their members are suffering. God is not what we are saying, God is God of equality.
ReplyDeleteits sad to see that men of God are being criticised for being wealthy, Should they remain poor because they chose to serve God? or does God not bless with riches and wealth? can we remember Job, Solomon etc? please lets leave this men who have shown that you don't have to steal to get wealth.
ReplyDeleteYou sure don't..just open a church!

DeleteI implore you in the name of Jesus to read my comment to Bro Ephraim above. Your comment on Solomon amazed me and I want to quickly state the following maybe you never gave it a thought:
1. Did you think of what became of solomon at the end of his live has he strayed away from God because of this earthly riches?
2. Did you read Solomon's statement when he looked at himself, his live and live in general: he exclamed: "Vanity upon Vanity..." read Ecclesiastes 1
3. And the last, did you ever read the account of Queen Sheba visit to King Solomon in 1 King 1-23; you might have read it and might not, but I want to point out something to you and everyone in verse 5 of that Scripture: "... the food on his table, the seating of his servants..." NKJV. I stopped there. But for more understanding I want to quote that same verse using the NLT (New living Translation) version: "she was overwhelmed. She was also amazed at the food on his tables, the organization of his officials and their splendid clothings".
If you have yet not seen what am driving at, I want you to take note of the amazement of this Very Rich Queen when she saw Solomon's servants/officials. Their clothings, their standing, their looks, everything speaks wealth. So tell me, what is the difference between Solomon's servants and the workers you have in today's Churches. The point is they both serve. But can you draw a correlation between those servants of Solomon and the Christian workers today? Obviously No! The Pastor live in affluence and wealth but in that same Church there is someone even a worker crying for Just one meal.
God will open everyones eyes to see and hear

ReplyDeleteThose desiring to get rich will fall into many temptation 2cor.remember faithful servants of God like paul and peter, they denied themselves the riches of this world to advance Gods word.hypocrite pastors
ReplyDeleteIn as much as the money is not from the church, then it is none of our business. But if it is from the church purse, I object to their wealth.
ReplyDeletemanna......
ReplyDeletethe scripture said dat we(the people of God)will lend to the nations.how can you lend to the nations wen u urself need financial help.Jesus Christ our example had every thing at his disposal, all he needed to do was to give thanks and it will multiply or send to the fish to collect wealth from its stomach. He has given us his riches and taken our poverty on the cross, but whichever you take is solely ur choice.choose u dis day!!!!
Abraham was rich,Jacob, lsaac,Joseph though suffered alot was rich.David,Solomon,Jesus was rich so much so that they tore his garment when he was killed if it was a rag they wouldnt ve bothered. You attract what u admire, leave Gods people alone else u incurr d wrath of God.God is big n doesnt want us poor thats y Jesus came to die.The bible says l wish above all things that though mayest prosper n be in health even as thy soul prospers.Men of God poor?y should they?so whats d message of salvation. There would be no need serving God if there is no promise.
ReplyDeleteSir/Ma, please take time to read my comment to Bro Ephraim at the top maybe you can gain some understanding and begin to see your Salvation differently. Its far worth more than what you just stated sir/ma
DeleteMost people making comment here don't even read the Bible.the word of GOD says HIS children will be rich among the nation and will lack nothing good. Our bearing much froot is to HIS glory. But I think they should do more for the poor even in there congregation. Let stop criticizing pastors because we don't know the men of GOD among them.
ReplyDeleteI am not judging but believes that preachers of the word of God should be humble, even if they should be rich, they should not show it b/c most people that give ophatory in the church are poor and look up to the preachers for emulation. Christ told the rich to share all he has to the poor, Christ was just going about preaching, he was not after wealth but the word of God. What are you preaching when you are flying four private jets and living an opulent life when millions are dying of hunger?
ReplyDeleteThe blessing of God makes RICH and adds no sorrow...that's the bible. If God have blessed you, prepared to be RICH in all ramifications!! He came poor so I will be rich...glory!
ReplyDeleteRemember when God shared the blessings for the 12 sons of Jacob? He told the tribe of Levi who were the PRIEST ( that served in the church) "I am your portion" and the 11 other tribes always brought their thithes to the Levites! Now that made the levites to have morethan enough!....because their work was to serve in the church!!
As for the xter of the men of God, you judges should go and sleep! Even angels are not perfect! Otherwise satan wouldn't have disobeyed God. Try and catch them in heaven abd see wether they are perfect or not. For as long as we remain on earth, flesh and blood will always WANT something! Remember Paul?..." The things I want to do I don't see myself do.the things I don't want to do, I see myself do" and yet he was a great Apostle!! If you undestand that Chritianity is a race, then you will not JUDGE!!
Its your duty to pay your Tithes!! And also to give God offerings because that is the only chanell God can bless you. Most times those that don't give Tithes and offerings are often the ones that complain about how Pastors have money...imagine.
Finally, asides being pastors, they are into one business or the other! So just shut ur mouths and enjoy your poverty!! And let those who who know the worth of Christ dying on the cross enjoy the grace...salvation, good health, liberty, wealth, dominion etc its my RIGHT! That's why he went to Calvary...oh Jesus I love you!!
Don't forget judges...heaven is a city made of gold and diamonds and all that! Its a rich city...there are no poor people in heaven!! Better practice it here, but don't let the wealth get you to hell! You need the money to evangelise ooo!!
Isaiah 61v6
ReplyDelete6 You will be called priests of the LORD,
ministers of our God.
You will feed on the treasures of the nations
and boast in their riches.
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills;and all NATIONS shall flow to it. Isaiah 2:2
ReplyDeleteHE(JESUS) was poor so that we through HIS poverty might become RICH! Provided it is not ill-gotten...we are made to be wealthy and not the heathens ok.WEALTH BELONGS TO GOD's CHURCH and all NATIONS are running to it!

Stealing, Stealing, Stealing...Stealing in the name of the Lord. My Fathers house of worship has become the den of sin...Stealing in the name of the lord. Yet the Pastors drive fancy cars and enjoy everything good .. stealing in the name of the lord.

hey are having their reward already as Jesus said. Most of us know that in Naija, to be so rich and wealthy, u should either be a pastor, a school owner, an oil magnate, a musician, a footballer.
ReplyDeleteThe so called men of God in Naija now own most of the schools. WHY ARE THEY NOT FARMING AND THEREBY CREATING EMPLOYMENT FOR THEIR FOLLOWERS. IS IT PROSPERITY THAT JESUS CAME TO PREACH? HOW DID JESUS DO IS MINISTRY AND HOW DID HE SAY HIS SERVANTS SHOULD DO IT? Most Naija pastors and follwers are fooling themselves and are blind as Jesus said .."if a blind man lead a blind man, both will fall into a pit". WE ALL BEWARE.
@Fahdy2k
ReplyDeleteYour comments are okay but doesn't carry Spirituality. You made it to look like it's final and no other side to it.It's only God that knows all things,no human being can talk in assertion.Only God has the final and single sided word.If your comment is Spiritual, you have to balance the two ends and leave the judgement to God.Let's imagine it this way, what of if only one of these men mentioned above has his riches in Godly manner?Ok.....it's not possible for God to give men riches to that extent?Non of these men mentioned above possesses what King Solomon,King David,Job had,Check the scripture very well. That's why you leave them to God.I always believe,if God doesn't has hand in a thing,it's the time that will judge this, because,He(God) is jealous and He doesn't act as if He doesn't exit,He normally helps Himself,no one can help Him.That's why He(God) said,....'Vengeance belongs to me'If they got there riches in questionable ways, well,God will judge and NOT man. There some things will we can't do to help God,He doesn't like that.He can help Himself,He can correct anything that needs correction. But if we try to judge or help Him,He is furious at this!
Not surprised that the comments of most people is to discredit d pastors. However, am deeply impressed with our GOD because HE will not asks any1 for their opinion b4 blessing these pastors. and will always reward where1 according 2 their works. Stop attacking these men of GOD, dat why u all live in lack. That why u never have, all managing. Una nor dey learn!!!. Same thing u all did 2 JESUS when HE was on earth. Today u all say JESUS did this, JESUS did dat but when HE was on earth, Una say HIM way nor GOOD. D next thing, UNA KILL AM. NA PASTORS now, UNA nor face. Rubbish! JESUS is KING and those who follow HIM will always be RICH. IS that simply.
ReplyDeleteUnder Judaism which the old testament truly represents, the payment of tithe was recomended by moses. The same moses went ahead to lay down the modalities for the payment of what could be called tithe in Deutronomy 26,verses 12 - 15.The question is,why is it that the pastors are so rich while a majority of the members are poor?In as much as am not averse to the payment of tithe though it is not a christian principle, but before you dash your money to your pastor in the name of tithe, pls read the portion of the bible quoted above. The tithe is a thing of the law of moses and if you want to harness the blessings following the payment of it,follw the steps as layed by moses above. Our pastors would wish that you read only the book of malachy which seems to support their deceit but does not actually.Malachy a livite, was addressing a community of judaists who already knew what and how tithes are paid.By saying that they should bring all their tithe to the house of God,he meant that portion that belongs to the livites.Tithe is an all inclusive offering where one tenth of your harvest is divided amongst the strangers, the livites(pastors),the widows and the orphans. If you gave your pastor everything,it is no tithe, may be a dash or anything but certainly not tithe. It is after sharing tithe amongst these group that you can now challenge GOD.PLS READ THE ABOVE BIBLE PORTION.When u shall have done this the blessings as promised by moses follows you.You dont need your pastor to pray for u after paying ur tithe for the blessings to come. The bible passage above says that tithe is paid every three(3)years.We notice that our so called pastors becoming billionaires by the day, while the congregation that pays the tithe instead of growth, retards.Reason, what u pay does not qualify as tithe, you simply dash out one tenth of your hard earned money at the end of the month to another man, thats why u dont grow.Pay your tithe as recommended by moses in the bible passage above and you will prosper.Dont be deceived anymore. As for me,no pastor can deceive me into dashing him my money because the death of christ liberated us from the demands of the law and the payment of tithe is one of them.In christ jesus, there is only one condition-just believing in him and you will have all, tithe or no tithe. No wonder,no where is the mention of tithe made in the new testament. But for my fellow christians who still believe in the payment of tithe, pls in order to harness the blessings and the promises of this practice,do it as ordered my moses himself in the passage above.Dont give everything to your pastor, you simply enrich him with no gains at all.Be wiser.
ReplyDeleteI once knew a homeless woman who got a lump sum of $30,000 as missed govt asst money and gave $25,000 of it to a Marcerillo's ministries(a very very wealthy man) mind you this woman although mentally unstable had 3 sons that were in the care of relatives..when the oldest found out he called the church's hq in los angeles and demanded the money to be returned further explaining that the contributor was mentally unstable and also had 3 dependants..that they cld check with the hospital and doctors whose care she has been under..do you think they did the Godly thing and returned said money?? Of course not
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Atlanta the same thing happens here...they prey on the desperation of the desperate..the only man/woman of God I will ever respect wld be the likes of mother Theresa...those who have denounced personal material comfort let alone wealth....they give all they have/recieve to those who need it more.
The rich man asked Jesus " what can I do to inherit the kingdom of God?" Jesus replied "Accept and believe in God...sell your things and give to thr poor then come and follow me" the rich man went away sad.
ReplyDeleteAnother rich man in the bible was so generous, he built synagogoues, gave to the poor and widows. God was so moved he asked Peter to preach to him and convert and baptise him because he's worthy of the kingdom. He gave
Another rich man had great riches and harvest and though of only himself and God was angry with him that he killed him.
The bible says"and this is a true religion, to give to the poor, minister to widows by helping them, help orphans, Love God and your neighbor, be moved by compassion at the sufferings of the poor. This is a honest and true religion of God".
All these pastors have so much money, they can't put their heads together to build highly subsidized hospitals, schools, motherless homes, home for the blind and sick etc. They proud in their riches without looking at the poor.
God gave them this which is good but they have not tolly utilized it the way God would be so pleased.
This is my comment. Think on it.
Mother Theresa, John Wesley, Oscar Schindler are examples we should see!
God gave them this which is good but they have not tolly utilized it the way God would be so pleased.
ReplyDeleteThis is my comment. Think on it.
Mother Theresa, John Wesley,Ghandi,Martin Luther King and Oscar Schindler are examples we should see!
A man rich man asked Jesus " what can I do to enter the Kingdom of God?", Jesus replied "Obey the commandments of God...sell your things and give to the poor" the man walked away sad.
ReplyDeleteAnother rich man was so nice, he built synagogues, schools, gave the poor, the widows and homeless. God was so moved that he told Peter to preach to him and baptise him.
Another rich man had so much wealth and goods but bcos he was stingy and didn't care abt the hungry and needy around him, God was angry and demanded his life. God called him a fool.
The bible says a pure religion is this "to love God, give to the widows, the orphans and the needy around you and to have a pure compassionate heart" this is true and pure religion that God wants.
God gave these pastors riches but they have not yet used it completely to the benefit of mankind around them instead they have decided to take more.
They can use their riches to build hospitals, schools, home for aged and blind that are highly subsidized if they all put their riches together.
We have examples like Mother Theresa, John Wesley, Mahatma Gandhi, Oscar Schindler and Martin Lurther King. Those are examples for us to see.
They showed faith, riches and compassion to all around them.
God will give them strength no to be overwhelmed by religiosity thereby forgetting what is truly important in life: Love and Compassion towards the sufferings of his fellow man
Hear this FAHDY2K: Being a believer does not disqualify a man from becoming rich and riches doesnt mean u are heading towards the hell so far u are faithful to God and serve Him with all ur heart. The Lord say's i will make a distinction btw those who serve me and those who serve me not. Who told u that the apostles were poor? When God created man in the begining, the first statement that comes out of Him was ''be Fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth''. If ur own way of knowin the right man of God is the poverty nature of dt person, u are gettin it wrong and u need the help of holy spirit. That's y God says ''my people perish for lack of knowldge''. God is speakin to some people wt poverty mentality like u... The God that we serve is full of glory, honor, virtues riches, power.... Pray that God shld make u resemble Him in everytin and follow His laws. U too can be rich and make a positive impact in this world and still make heaven gallantly. Stop critisizing men of God cos of their riches, u cannot contend for God or else u put ursef under curse. If u are serving God faithfully and obeying all His law and u still find ursef under the yoke of lack/want, that's means u lack knowledge. Ur case is like the son of the meat seller that's feedind on bone while his father is the one supplyin real meat. May the Lord open ur eyes to see the inspiration of the word and not just the letter. If u are rich today that doesnt me u must end up in poverty, cos dts not d parameter to make heaven. Pls, Poverty is not of God. Jesus is Lord.
ReplyDelete"Pls poverty is not of God." Of course, no argument there. But you need to open your eyes to see that real riches are not material but spiritual. That's why our Lord and saviour taught about storing up wealth in heaven. The wealth that comes from God is contentment, not greed. A lot of Christians today are clamouring after worldly acquisitions, and in their desire to justify such yearning ascribe different meanings to the scriptures. Come to think of it, isn't there something in the scriptures about a rich man, heaven, a camel and needle? Please open your eyes.
DeleteThe bible says that Jesus Christ became poor so that we can be rich. Also, that He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek/serve him. Ride on in Jesus's riches and rewards pastors as long they are gotten through Xt Jesus
ReplyDeleteMost of you are stupid what has the wealth of men of god got to do with anything. Its not the presence of money that cause sin but the absence
ReplyDeleteAfter building Covenant University with Tithes and Offerings from the sweat of the worshipers, these same class of worshipers cannot afford to enroll their children in such schools with the outrageous fees they are charging. What an irony. Must he own 4 private jets? Must he own houses in choice countries of the world? This is not true Christianity, it is Nigerian home grown Christianity and it is about time we open our eyes. This is my opinion.

ReplyDeleteThe real value of man of God does not rest on his material or financial opulence but on his life of godliness.
