Owners of private vehicles won’t be affected by the Lagos State Government’s new policy on number-plates, the state government said on Sunday.
The state government had some days ago announced that private and commercial vehicles in the state would be mandated to use its number-plates.
The announcement attracted wide criticism from Nigerians and the Federal Road Safety Commission.
However, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, said in a statement on Sunday that private vehicles were free to ply the state’s roads irrespective of the state where they were registered.
He said, “Number-plates are unified all over the federation. (Lagos State) Government never made any pronouncement that vehicles with other states’ number plates had been banned from plying Lagos roads.
“Only vehicles operating as commercial public transport will have to obtain the state’s number plates before being allowed to operate in and on Lagos roads.
“This is necessary to enable government have adequate information about such vehicles.
“To ensure the safety and security of lives of the people in the state, Regulation 41 sub section 1 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law stipulates that no person shall operate or caught to be operating a commercial vehicle without having obtained a commercial vehicle operator licence from the Lagos State Government.”
Opeifa said every licence issued would be given a “distinct number which shall be painted conspicuously on the front and rear part of the vehicle or in any other manner as may be prescribed by the Ministry of Transportation.”
The commissioner said, “The position of the government is that any commercial vehicle used for public transportation purpose within Lagos must obtain a permit from the government. In addition, the owner of such vehicle must have the vehicle registered in Lagos State.
“Regulation 43 sub section 1 of the law says a vehicle shall not be used or operated for commercial purposes unless the vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle with the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.”
