Independence speech: El-Rufai tackles Jonathan

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday, described President Goodluck Jonathan’s 52nd Independence Anniversary speech as 18 minutes of false claims.

El-Rufai also picked holes with the one year prayer project the President flagged off, stressing that rather than engage Nigerians and spend money on the project, President Jonathan must deliver on dividends of democracy by providing the needed infrastructure for Nigerians to enjoy.

El-Rufai, who noted that the broadcast lacked substance, said: “Is it at all possible to react to nothing? The speech was 18 minutes of false claims of accomplishments no one can see or feel, and promises that no one believes will be fulfilled.

“That is the tragedy of our nation today. That is why a country which constitution does not recognise any ‘state religion’ has resorted to a year of publicly-funded prayer project, instead of the harder work of providing inclusive leadership, honesty and integrity by example.”

Also commenting on the broadcast, Senator Domingo Obende, ACN, Edo North, noted that speeches might sound good and were semantics. But stressed that what was required was action.

He urged Jonathan to wake up to the challenges of governance, while sympathising with him against the backdrop that Nigeria is a complex country with myriad of problems.

  1. Mr Rufai, although you are also very corrupt and would do even worse if you had the chance, I must say that I do not disagree with anything to have said here. We are in trouble with this president who simply reels out what is instantly recognisable as false information provided to him by his loud mouthed 'yes men' that we see on our TVs barking loudly at us about intangible archievements that are being made like we are a nation of 150 million imbeciles who do not know rubbish when we hear it. That party called PDP will turn us to somalia very soon as it is a den for looters with no feelings or ideology

  6. To all you GEJ haters out there, can anyone please tell which civilian president has achieved as much in his first 15 months of office. Most, including the most vocal opposition critics (Governors), spent initial years doing little and accomplishing little, even with second terms. GEj's problem is a crisis of expectation, we expect too much, too soon and yet reject the necessary sacrifice that will foster progress. Nigerians want to go to heaven, nobody wants to die, GEJ has the unenviable task of dragging us, almost against our will, to a better future. And he will achieve it as most underestimated people do!!
