Flood sacks 100 communities in Rivers State

No fewer than 100 communities have so far been taken over by flood in Rivers State.

Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, who addressed newsmen, added that 12 committees, headed by the deputy governor, Mr. Tele Ikiru, had been set up to assist victims.

One of the buildings submerged by the flood in the state was the palace of the traditional ruler of Ekpeye Kingdom, His Majesty, Eze Robinson.

Several houses in Odiereke Ubie community, Ahoada West Local Government Area, where his palace is located, had also been taken over by flood. Other villages affected in the area were Ombor, Ikodu, Olokuma Ihulechi and Ubeta.

Meantime, Secretary General, Ekpeye Youth Congress, Mr. Eketu Oliver, who spoke to newsmen on the development, appealed to the state and Federal Governments to take urgent measures to cushion the pains of victims. He said so far, no fewer than 49 villages had been affected by the flood.
He enjoined governments at all levels to come to the aid of those affected, adding that a camp should also be set up for them.

Victims of the flood disaster have, however, been assured of timely response by the state government. State Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Semenitari, said camps would be set up in all the affected communities for victims, adding that relief materials would also be urgently provided to cushion their pains.

She said: “No fewer than 100 communities have been affected by the unfortunate incident, and the state executive council has constituted a committee chaired by the deputy governor to put in place measures that would guarantee the safety of our people.”
